Question/opinion here...
Not up on any engines last many years. Never had a car/ pickup engine/trans rebuilt. Either lucky or took care of them.
Now; Back in forklift and equipment days, dealt with a lot of Continentals. 4 and 6 cyl, Y112, F-162 &163.

Had them done by Continental in Memphis. In Friday at opening time, down and in vat over week end, examines, measures and call me Monday morning. Agree on work and they build, twist in, and I pick up by noon Wednesday.

Sal Cotone ran the place, and had forgotten more about engines than some mfgs engineers ever read..

Sal would not bore a block over .030. If it would not clean up at .030, sleeve it. Reason he gave was cylinder wall was too thin to absorb/dissipate the heat adequately, engine would run hot. Most of these were in forklifts and airport tugs with tight cowling, slow motion, high RPM and start stop operation.
I can see where a car going down road at 60 with a fan and sporadic start /stop would be different. Variable?
An opposite is a Continental on a hay press/combine, 8 to 12 noon, wide open in dust and chaff. Or rice well. Constant?

@ElmerFudpucker mentioned boring .040. Is this usual on auto engines, truck engines? Clean up, gain some CI's, save $.
Or all else being equal, sleeve it anyway back to standard. Just asking for info, nothing in use.

 

Intercooled, in trucks anyway. Can’t say for the ag/industrial applications.

yea ive not ever seen a .40 over , better look for .40 over pistons and rings first . Today anything is possible.
