I have driven manual and automatic. Much prefer the manual.. automatics put me to sleep.. dont think i will ever own an auto, and will only drive one if its required.

I find it boring. Drove my first auto a couple years ago and didn't like it. Too easy, challenges are good.

Have to be a full disclosure here. I absolutely would take an 18 in a heart beat. Nothing like having a gear for just about anything. However, when it comes to dealing with traffic situations, like LA, Portland, Denver, I’ll take that automated every time.

18 is even better thru traffic, being able to split the low end, just flow thru traffic perfectly. Never needing to hit the brakes

LOL!!! I drive local here in DFW, lucky for me I go out to Stephenville a lot, delivering freight.. I make 40$ an hour, time and a half after 40.. I love the automatics because I do get caught in traffic a lot.. you know the clutch is just one less thing you have to deal with in crazy traffic...

Just FYI... I mean no disrespect to the old school truckers or anyone else..that's just the money I'm making today .... God Bless!!?

Oh, me, me, me, this is a good one, let me dispel the rumor, shifting gears is fun, poppykok, it was just a part of the job. HP was so low, under 200 HP in some cases, all kinds of crazy transmissions came down the pike. In order to "keep the needle against the pin", meaning, road speed on hills would drop off so fast, sometimes skipping gears to keep the engine in the power band, specifically old Detroits. Before the "Roadranger", multiple transmissions were the norm. Duplex( 5x2), triplex( 3x5) quadriplex( 5&4), air 4x4, that corny Mack 10 speed. The 13 speed Roadranger , specifically designed for 2 cycle Detroits, I heard, changed everything. Yeah, it was a big ego booster, how well you shifted your gears, but for the most part, it was a PITA, and my right shoulder hurts just talking about it. With the motors today, a manual just isn't required, and I read too, 94% of all new class 8 trucks sold today, are automatics. If you simply must, I think a 9 or 10 speed is good enough, motors don't need shift points to be split anymore, and automatics widen the available drivers.
In a related story, I visit a site that focuses on classic cars for sale. The classics that come through for sale, the stick shift cars outnumber automatics at least 10 to 1. It's a startling fact, that nobody wants to shift gears anymore. I read, Toyota is the only car maker today to offer a stick in their pickups. People love classic cars, but I doubt would be able to shift a "3 on the tree" very well.
