Looking for input to help me decide how to grow my company by leasing on Owner Operators.
If you are a professional driver with your own truck who has been an owner operator for years working more or less independently, I want to know what is most important to you in a relationship with a carrier.
Please list your top 3 most valued qualities in a carrier.
    I appreciate your time.

No 1099s allowed. Decent rate, no forced dispatch.

The delusion of making money under your business model in the current state of affairs is a disaster in the making.

I’m going out on a limb and guessing you will be reliant on spot market load board crap.

All said and done there isn’t enough of the pie left to satisfy you or your leased on oo’s.

You will have a constant turnover, a destroyed carrier score and be in bankruptcy court in short order.

The only way these current companies, doing what you’re thinking to do stay in business is by screwing the oo’s out of every dime you can scrape off their settlements.

Anyway to answer your question..If I was going to lease my truck on to another carrier..my demands that are non negotiable.

I provide all credentials, Tag, ifta license, 2290, individual state credentials etc. I provide my own fuel card. Not going to let a carrier nickel and dime me by charging more for any of these items.

Certain ELOG providers I refuse to use so we need to be on the same page. I’ve brought my own elog to a carrier before and it worked out fine. Just have to give full control of it to the carrier responsible for safety.

I do all my own dispatching and you provide access to any load board that I want. If I use xyz broker and you have other drivers that screw up the relationship by having to many service failures with xyz then I am as good as gone..don’t have time or patience for idiots.

If I brought my own truck and trailer an 85/15 split is okay. There will be no added fees from the carrier to me.

You will pay me direct deposit into my bank account within two business days and not charge me a factoring fee because that comes out of your 15% cut.

That's what I'm wondering; if there are so many sub-par carriers bleeding oo's dry with fees, what could I offer to attract the best oo's? I would only sign on the most responsible, tested and proven drivers that like to work independently and appreciate an honest, straight forward carrier. I really appreciate the details you provided. A couple of Q's:
You didn't mention who would pay insurance?
What if the carrier took a set dollar amount each month and you kept the rest?...instead of a percentage. Seems to me that may be a good way to incentivize and attract the best drivers, or would they be more likely to run too hard and take more chances?
Or maybe lower the percentage to the carrier after a certain dollar amount each month?
    Thanks again.

I'm not looking to bring in customers. I'm looking into signing on oo's who want to run independently without the hassles of maintaining their own MC. I appreciate any feedback you have....

If someone is too lazy to maintain their own MC, they won’t be willing to run hard enough to keep you both alive. Thats the easy part, and it only takes several hours a year

I forgot to clarify insurance responsibilities.

You require that they have their own non-trucking/bobtail liability policies and you provide what’s required for your business..1mil liability and cargo insurance. This would be inclusive with the 85/15 split I used.

I want to stress one more time that there isn’t any money to be made..in decent freight rate times you can typically count on making 5% off of a driver.

The other huge issue is insurance.. for me putting on a second truck doubled my premiums.. Maybe you are in a low cost insurance area..I’m in the worst..Florida.

Next after looking at insurance costs, imagine having a driver who’s excellent in every way but likes spending time at home every month. How do you handle that driver when they don’t even cover what you’re paying to lease them on?

Not trying to beat you up because I had plans of 10 trucks and trailers myself.

Seen several threads thru out the years of this exact same postings. They will favor the O/O, give him everything except for a small fee for there “BROKERAGE” service. Then they disappear. Cracks me up. Very entertaining though. :laughing-guffaw::laughing-guffaw::laughing-guffaw::laughing-guffaw:
