Currently the next map update is in QA. How Rand will get it to the end user has not been decided yet. The same as the frequency of the updates.

Your mapping information is internal to your TND unit.

Several ways can be done to update your TND, but until Rand gives me the final word I cannot say how they will get the mapping database to you.

I am not trying to be totally vague, but as soon as I mention something then it is taken out of context sometimes. So, for this I will wait till Rand gives me the information. I have made several suggestions as to the updates that are easy for the user to do. But, Rand has the final say-so.

    thanks,
    Mark

Was one of the suggestions bittorrent? Cause that'd be pretty easy to spread and it'd cut Rand's bandwidth costs.

I can bring that up as a suggestion, but the biggest restriction on that is the entire DB has to be replaced before the TND can use it. Even though the mapping database is many files, the files interact. Thus the entire DB has to be downloaded first then replace the older DB.

    Thanks,
    Mark

No different than downloading it directly. You still have the have the whole package for it to work. Just tell them if they do decide to use BT, don't put it on superseed. That will just bottleneck it for a couple days before anyone can get it.

does anyone have a quick fix for the "lag"? it seems to happen at random times... lags about a quarter mile behind where I'm at. Usually when I need it most of course.

On the addresses on that wrong side of the road comment.
They are actually on the correct side of the road, it is the business that is on the wrong side.
If you watch the road the odd are on one side and even the other.
Many company's own the land across the street or just have a post address there. No clue why, but I see it allot.
The address is on the side the unit says, the building is just on the wrong side.

That is a firmware fix. RM is currently testing several new firmware updates to see if the lagging issue is resolved.

    Thanks,
    Mark

If you find an address that is incorrect, submit it via the Tell Rand. You will find sometimes addresses are off by x amount of feet also. You see this a lot in the country or with big plots of land. The Post Office has set up postal numbers to certain grids.

Most of the time if an address is wrong, then it is a simple DB error.

    Thanks,
    Mark

I hate getting suckered into having to prove myself, so to quote a couple of my older Vet friends... "dude, you weren't there so you wouldn't understand".

The TND 500 is not my first or only gps unit. I also have Sony which I use in my car and as a backup it the truck, and previously had a Cobra GPSM 7700. Both of those units show addresses on the correct side of the road while the TND 500 shows the same address on the opposite/wrong side.

My home address is a perfect example... I live on the odd numbered side of the street. As I approach my house which is on the right, the TND 500 tells me my address is on the left. (I do not own land across the street!). To prove a point, if I approach from the other direction and my house is on the left, the TND 500 tells me it is on the right. Again, this seems to be the case with about 75% or more of the addresses which I travel to. The TND 500 database is wrong. I would expect better of Rand McNally, especially since the other gps manufacturers have managed to get it right the first time.

RM uses NavTeq mapping databases. The other companies you mentioned use another, so it is a mapping database error. Please use the Tell Rand feature and let RM know those that are incorrect.

    Thanks,
    Mark
