Can a driver request a Level 1 inspection?

Yes you can, and sometimes they will do it, if they have time.
You had better make sure that everything is right before you do it though. As in brake adjustment and everything else you are supposed to inspect.
Since you will get points for anything that is wrong.

I was just looking at the CSA 2010 Methodology and it occurred to me that a small carrier can, feasibly, get a sorry BASIC Score from having a couple of not-so-great inspections....maybe a bad run of luck or maybe some money issues that keep a small carrier from being able to take care of maintenance issues as quickly as they might need to. It would be good if this carrier could volunteer for an inspection once their maintenance issues have been resolved to "spread the denominator" in the BASIC calculations. I'm looking to the future a little bit....might want to own my own equipment someday.

    Still leaves the same question.

Take care of the equipment and maybe you will never see an inspection.

There are many on this board who have never had an inspection.

With the new rules coming, there are many issues that may not be properly recorded on the paperwork, let alone the vehicle inspection.

The only thing wrong with your theory is that ANY inspector worth his ticket book can ALWAYS find SOMETHING wrong!!! It just depends on how motivated they are or how they interpret the rules. And since ANY violation, real or imagined, does damage to the safety rating, why would you ask to get poked in the backside w/o lube???

That's interesting! With all the talk of inspections, I assumed (bad idea) that inspections happened with greater frequency than is actually the case in reality. So I think what you are saying is that a driver and/or a driver's vehicle has to "look like" they need an inspection or that an inspection might be warranted.

What about random inspections? Is there such a thing? And, how does ISS-D Recommendation come into play? I've read a lot of stuff but I'm finding out that much of what I've read doesn't translate well out there in the real world or that I'm missing the point somewhere.

You mentioned "issues not being properly recorded on the paperwork, let alone the vehicle inspection". I'm not sure what that means.

When you have time, could you expand a little on these topics? As an older wannabe, I'd like to stay ahead of the curve.....those young'ns out there have time to catch up to the curve!:biggrin_2559:

First, it is the luck of the draw. You could be one that runs on two lanes and they do not work them as much. You could be driving for a company that is not on the hit list.

Paperwork is now going to be a spot lighted issue.

Sloppy paperwork may indicate that you are tired.
Failure to properly list all of the information that should be on the log.
Not neatly written. They might be wanting to see totally neat books.

It is hard to say what they might want.

Or your just a sloppy bookkeeper with bad penmanship skills!
(Not trying to hijack, but are kids even taught penmanship anymore??? Judging by the apparent lack of this skill in my kids, I guess not!)

The problem with the new regs is that it allows them to have an opinion as to the driver being tired.
