Ok, question for the gearheads and/or electrical folks…

I’m looking for a solution to keeping a car battery charged over a period of time.

I keep a PV here in CB and last year I got tired of jumping it after it sat for so long between me getting back here. I put a new battery in it thinking the battery was just not keeping a charge.

But today I’m back in CB for a funeral in the morning and it’s dead again.

My thought… do they make a solar trickle charger? Something that runs off Solar but then is connected to the cigarette lighter plug… putting a little power back over the wiring to keep it topped off.

I’ve seen “battery jumpers” that they say you plug into that plug and can “jump” a car that way but I have no clue if that’s even realistic… but IF that would work, so would a little Solar Trickle Charger.

just how far off base is this thinking?

I’ll probably get a portable battery setup to jump it rather than dropping the trailer to jump it off my truck. And just keep it in the truck ready to jump it or something.

figured I’d touch base with the wise ones of the room.

    Knucklehead Thanks this.

Or… do they make a “plug” that I could just unplug the battery between uses but not have to disconnect from the post?

would a disconnected battery hold a charge longer than an installed one?

    Knucklehead Thanks this.

You might have something in the vehicle that’s draining the battery. I had that problem until I had the problem fixed and now I don’t have that issue with my car being left at the yard with my company…

Lots of solar trickle chargers on Amazon. I use one for my camp trailer

Just take the battery terminal off the battery when your away with a fresh battery it should be fine. They do sell a battery charge solar that can connect to the battery but it might not work that well.

    MidWest_MacDaddy and Knucklehead Thank this.

All newer cars have a slight drain on the battery to preserve memory to the radio etc. Disconnect the negative cable when you park, also buy a $40 jump box from Harbor Freight or Amazon and keep in the truck. I have one that I use at the boat ramp all the time to help people with dead boat batteries that they don't check before they head out.
