Throwback to when a fake sign language interpreter crashed a major police press conference in the U.S.! Derlyn Roberts, a woman with a history of fraud charges, posed as an interpreter during a live media briefing announcing the arrest of a suspected serial killer in Tampa. Instead of accurate translation, she signed complete gibberish. Outrage followed, especially since one of the victim’s mothers is deaf. “She waved her arms like she was singing Jingle Bells,” said Rachell Settambrino, a deaf ASL instructor at the University of South Florida. An early red flag? The strange way Roberts “warmed up” by wiggling her fingers in a bizarre wave before the conference began.
