I have a lot of respect for truck drivers hauling freight across the country and the skill and stamina it takes to do it safely and professionally. In my mind, truckers ought to be the group of drivers most aware of the rules of the road and highway etiquette in general, because they drive for a living.

So what I don't understand is, in Ontario, when driving on 400 series highways (divided, multi-lane, limited access) I driving in the right lane as per the law and constantly passing trucks cruising in the second (center) lane.

By law they are required to move to the right to allow faster traffic to pass, but this rarely happens. I feel uneasy passing on the right, but neither do I want to change over two lanes to the left, pass on the left, and then switch back two lanes to the right again to resume proper lane position.

This happens in light traffic conditions with nothing preventing the truck from driving in the right hand lane. I often notice this with bus drivers too, so it's not just big rigs.

    What gives?

the middle lane is the best lane for a truck to be in because then it doesnt have to worry about all the traffic from the on and off ramps

you could be switchling lanes all day long if you drove in only the right lane

and here I thought it was because they didn't want to change lanes when on the cell phone. I swear every one I pass on the right is holding a phone up to their ear.

That's the lazy way to drive. You create more conflicts hogging the middle lane forcing other trucks to pass you on the right. Not only are there signs most places saying slower traffic keep right. Your drivers handbook states drive right, pass left. A vehicle can actually get a ticket for improper passing using the right lane.

I use the right lane all the time. Ramp traffic doesn't bother me as I read traffic from a distance. Only time it's a problem is when someone is blocking the lane change.

If everyone followed the rules instead of making their own rules up, driving would be alot easier and safer.

That little sports car that passes you on the right and gets in your blind spot as you decide to move over for an exit is going to getcha one day.

The ones hogging the middle lane are the ones with the cell phone. :)

I have a 73 mph truck and I also take the least resistance, It does bother me when a slow driver going less than the posted is in the middle lane though.... Go in the one that you can keep up with the flow.

Yeah you UPS Freight and Fed Ex Freight drivers are the worst at this. I see you guys hogging the middle lane all the time. You seem to think that because your 69 and 67 mph trucks are faster than most 62-65 mph trucks that you have this right. To my way of thinking youre just lazy and unproffessional. Some of us out here can go faster than 69mph so when you see us coming up kindly move to the right lane for a few seconds.

Use the left lane then. It has the least resistance. Unless you consider a cop resistance. :biggrin_2559:

There is nothing safer than trafflic flow going the same regardless of speed. Governing trucks and restricting lanes causes more trouble that it's worth.

It's tough to do that on some highways with looping on/off ramps hidden by trees. Hwy 99 between Merced and Sacramento comes to mind.

I stay in middle lane on I-10 through El Paso, and I-40 through Amarillo. It seems a lot of residents there get on highway for a block or two just to avoid traffic lights on frontage roads, and they maintain 45mph.
