There are decent companies out there that will hire new drivers. The key is that you have to get out and look. The internet is not the place. Most of those companies have limited websites or none at all. Knock on doors put your best foot forward and go for it. It will work. Persistence is the key.

The main reason that a lot of newbs go to the mills is that it's a seemingly easy way into the indusrty.

No reason to get testy here. People on this forum do their best to advise new drivers as to the potential pitfalls of entering the industry with a so-called "training company"

Yes the economy is in the toilet. Yes you do have other choices and you'd better look at them and try to work all of the options for all that they're worth because the likelyhood of being able to feed a family on a rookie driver's wage at a large training company is almost zero.

I admire your determination, however, maybe, you need to rethink your strategy.

I think that I just did. Additionally you can try to get a job with an O/O. Just try the smaller local companies. Try looking at the larger companies as being at the bottom of the list. Work the list from the top down. you never know you just might walk in to a company on a day when they need another driver and the hiring guy really likes you.

    my 2 cents.

As Jimbo had said, get out and knock on some doors. Talk to some smaller outfits. Don't paint yourself into a corner, maybe there are local jobs just gotta look. It is very doubtful you will find anything on the internet, but you should still look.
The op made some rookie mistakes that are costing him. That tow bill for one. By looking at the post it appears that road break down was not sending a tow truck and the driver set this up with the dealer. Sorry but that is on him. You need a qualcom message from breakdown stating that a tow truck is on the way. Then you can hassle them as to when, because the message would have been followed with approved, contact name, company name, and phone number for the wrecker.
It isn't going to do me or the op any good to pick this apart, however like I said in an earlier post Newbs need to read this a couple of times. Sucks he didn't get a decent trainer that could have enlightened him on this some.
Now for my 2 cents to the op. It looks like maybe you might be in an area where you could drive, grain truck, feed truck, ingrediant truck for mills, livestock, tanker for milk. Check it out you might be surprised. Best of luck to you.

Well sorry to say but you simply found out the hard way like so many do. I almost made the mistake of going to the Swift school in 2002, but an angel was watching out for me and I found better local training in my hometown in 2003 for less than half the cost. My first year of driving I was making double to even triple what most Swift and Werner drivers were making

I have only been driving for 1.5 years now. I did the Swift/ USA Truck mega carrier thing. I'm glad it's over as I lucked into a small (130 truck) carrier. No QC, truck does 75+ and treated like a human. I would like it to be my last OTR co before I go local or do something else. Will never work for a mega again!

Is it really necessary to copy the whole post, in order to put in a 3 line reply?

may i ask you a question?
if werner pays $350 a week, how is that your "gross earnings" end up being $13 ?
    did you mean "net earnings"?
350 a week is barely enough to maintain yourself on the road. meals and other things you might need. No one said that you'll get rich while driving as a student. Also, as an adult you should have questioned 45 grand first year, since median earnings for truck drivers is about 30 k. So, should be right about that number your first year. I'm no expert, but that's what most folks are reporting.
I am just curious how 350 turned into 13.
Thank you very much for answering and I hope things will get better for you
