I don't think I have double clutched since I was trained. Of course now I don't even have a clutch in my truck. Nice.

As a trucking school student I've had the same question in mind. I was also wondering whether a newbie with a trucking company accompanied by their trainer could float shift.

I clutched for about the first year...then I finally figured out how to float the gears. When you are in your trainer's truck, do what he or she tells you. If I had a student trying to learn how to float in my truck I'd throw them out...at about 60 mph. My tranny is still as tight as new and I intend it stay that way. Someone scratches my gears and they are THROUGH! Also, when you test out for your own truck, double-clutch for the test. Floating will get you to not pass in some cases.

And all that clutching had an added bonus for me...nicer legs...because the other leg got exercise too, on the brake and fuel.

Again, why not other?. I float when upshifting, clutch out usually when down shifting, and float it into the lower gear. Sometimes these SNI trucks are a bear to get out of gear when downshifting.:biggrin_25525:

I could never get the hang of double clutching , so as soon as i finished school and of course my road test. I taught myself how to float gears and been doing it ever since.

I float all the time both upshifting and downshifting but not in heavy traffic. When I come up to a stop sign or red light etc I just throw it in neutral and use the air brakes because downshifting is not always necessary and its stupid to downshift all the way to a stop because thats a good way to get into a collision.I vote Float :biggrin_25522:
