You know, im starting to think..
From most of the responses here, its clear that this truck is not a good idea for actually using. The ones that really convince me are posted by people who have actually driven these trucks in the 70s and 80s...kinda tells me something..
Anyway, I was thinking....I love old vehicles...doesnt matter what they are, cars, trucks, bikes..hell, why do you think i drive this?
I bought that back when i was doing good here at werner, so obviously i bought it cause i liked it... of course, from this other picture, there must be something seriously wrong with me:
But I also have had the thought in my head for a few years now that it would be really neat to convert an old truck into a motorhome...Hmm. A cabover would be a good choice too, since there's no length wasted by a huge engine...Hmm... I'd set it up so i can tow my car behind it and so I can put my motorcycle in it....hehe....
Is there something wrong with me for having a thing for old cabovers?
Anyway, $4000 for this? NOT HAPPENING. Especially since southernpride told me in a pm that he had one of these that he couldnt get rid of for ages..lol.
I'll look at it before i try lowballing the guy, but...I think that if I point out what its going to cost me to get a set of tires...and that the tires on it are 100% dangerous....maybe i can get him to bite on a lower offer. And if he doesnt, I know he's not likely to sell this truck at that price. Maybe after a couple months of trying to sell it I can come back to him and try the lowball again.
Maybe all the tires on it really aren't so bad and it's just a couple of bald ones because someone couldnt afford to replace them all. Cant tell much from the pics.
I'm also starting to think I would be better off starting the power washing business I've been thinking about ever since the first time I stopped trucking...I know a guy that used to do it and still washes windows..for many of the same people. I think I could get a decent customer base growing pretty fast and make just as much money as I would from trucking...and be home every day. And one hell of a lot less risk than trucking (you go bankrupt at home instead of 2000 miles away with no fuel!) But I have trucking in my blood..so I think i'd have to do a project involving trucks even if i'm not gonna be driving anymore....
I love driving but I like being home too, LOL... I dunno if i'd make much money with the ability to come home whenever i feel like it...
Anyhow, whats everyone think this truck is worth, if there's no damage being hidden from the pictures, and if the tires were all good used tires?
I was also considering offering to trade my motorcycle for it, since he said he'd be interested in trading for "cool things like atvs, etc"...I paid $2k for it and I think thats about what this truck is worth....and that's about the average price for that bike in my area, and theres always a couple of them on the market ... maybe he would bite on that. I could just go buy another one for $2k right after, LOL...
But there ain't no way he's selling that truck for $4k. Unless he sells it to a fool. Maybe he'll talk some prime driver into it, i dunno...Last edited: Jun 1, 2010

8v92 run forest run for your life
-
is it that bad, even for a project like a motorhome?
How come everyone on here thinks its an 8v92 but i was told it was a 6v71? The motor could very well be older than the truck for all we know. -
If there ever was a 6V71, it would put out similar horsepower to the inline 6/71. That two-stroke joke produced 238 horsepower.
The National Antique Truck Show will be in your area in 2011. Go to auction and see for yourself what those old trucks are worth. You could buy one and drive it home from South Bend. Also, pick up a Wheels of Time magazine at Farm and Fleet. It has several pages of restored and unrestored trucks for sale so you can compare prices. -
Maybe i can get an even OLDER one. I sure would love to have a triplex truck LOL. Always wanted to see what it was like to drive one...
I wonder what landstar would say if you showed up to orientation with a triplex truck...haha. It'd be funny just for ##### and giggles... -
Sweet! Go for it.

If you'd like to know what it's like to drive a COE with springs, then do the following:
1. Jack up your car, remove the springs and replace them with four 80lb sacks of hardened concrete.
2. Remove the foam from the driver's seat and replace it with one 80lb sack of hardened concrete.
3. Remove the tires from the rims and replace them with four 80lb sacks of hardened concrete.
4. Drive to Lafayette, LA and proceed south on US 167 while simultaneously dialing your chiropractor... you're gonna need it. -
But seriously folks!
They rode rough but not THAT rough. I ran a lot of miles in a cabover with spring ride suspension and it rode rough but it wasn't too bad.
The primary beef I had with a cabover was the lack of space to stow your gear and the whole "doghouse" thing.
I had a couple'a #### nice lookin' old Freightliners in the 70's and they were pretty comfortable for the type of truck they were.
One way to get rid of all the weaklings in this industry today would be to make them all drive cabovers for a few years when they first start out....90% of the steeringwheel holder types would quit after a week!
