You are allowed to use the Ohio Turnpike if it is a trip more than 600 miles. Other than that we are free to use them. There are ways around the turnpike that aren't too out of route.

stay on 94 out of chicago and grab 20 it goes east and west pretty much following same route as 80. It has lights and little towns but not that much longer
-
It has 39 lights in IN alone.
-
US 30 is a better route if you want to stay off the green stamp.
-
And thats all? I think you're missing a couple of zeros off that number! It sure felt like 39000000 to me driving through there.
I've driven that route a few times though, its not bad and its not confusing to stay on the route like some backroads are. However, I almost killed a dumb 4 wheeler once on US20 in indiana! Nowhere near a stop light either. It was on that nice stretch of freeway in western indiana, and the guy missed an exit...did a uturn and drove the wrong way to get back to the exit, and got close enough to me that it was impossible to stop...however, he made it just in time after i started blowing my air horn... -
My mistake, I meant US30. I counted the lights my first time through because it was night and I was bored. That number is driving from west to east starting in Merrillville.
-
Just 2 hours longer. on a good day. -
-
I use to be routed along US 30 instead of the IN and OH tollroad. Talk about a PITA!!! I hate that route and it takes a lot longer that way.
-
No way there are 39 lights between Merrillville and Ft Wayne and if you use your head you can avoid Merrillville. Once you get past the Fort it is Clear sailing to Mansfield. Good truck stop in Grovertown also a real TS not a travel center. You younguns get in way to big a hurry.
