Or, to put it another way, we have guys with two or three decades of experience and millions of miles under their belts saying it takes that long to figure out these darn log books. It ain't rocket science people.

Honestly...A chimp could figure out how to fill out a log book with about a week of practice!
I just am constantly amazed by the handwringing that goes on here about how the DOT is gonna wreck your whole career because you were sitting in the seat reading a book while you were logged in the sleeper berth or off duty.

    It's f.....g ridiculous!

True but you couldn't even get a foot in the door of the industry I spent 30+ years in before trucking. We are all the sum of our experiences. Why don't we stop biatching at each other. I am sure you could teach me something
about trucking. I might know something you don't as well. Peace.

:biggrin_2556: What mandatory 34 hr reset?
Sorry there rookie but where does it say mandatory? It doesn't it just says you can reset your hours to 70 if setting for 34 hours. But if you are under the assumption that when you hit 70 you must reset you are wrong. You do not but you MUST take 10 if you have met the 11/14 hour requirement or just plain ran out of hours for the period. Then add those hours back from 7 days ago, That is if there are any hours to add.

As long as you have hours to mess with you don't HAVE to do a 34 hour reset. It might be some company that thinks they have to hold a drivers hand that says reset or some misinformation like a internet hoax, but it's not a written rule

Ok, So I may be wording it wrong, but please understand that the phrase "Mandatory Reset" is what was told to us in the classroom. We are being told that, upon reaching 68 - 70 hrs for a 7 day period, WE MUST take a 34hr Break (off duty) in order to Restart our original 70. At the end of the 34hrs of this break, "ANY & EVERYTHING" Above the 34hr restart, becomes Null & Void and is no longer figured into the 7 or 8 day computation. Its just like as if we started all over fresh & new.Now if this is wrong, then by all means, SHOW ME!! If it is in a book somewhere, Point me to the exact page, this way I can toss it into the instructor's face & sit back & watch him eat a little crow with his "I'm God, I'm Never Wrong" attitude.

I can't believe you guys missed this! He said "70 hours maximum in 7 days". Funny, I guess I am doing it all wrong doing 70 hours in 8 days...well I am getting older so it takes me a bit longer to get there! LOL

In his last post, he stated his instructor told them at the end of the 7th day, at 68-70 hours accumulated, you would have to do a "mandatory restart". Actually he is sort of, in a way correct. In actuality, on the 8th day, you won't have any hours to work with anyway, so take the 24 hours of day 8, along with the remaining hours of day 7, (by the 24 hours in a day clock), plus whatever additional hours are needed from 0001 forward of "day 9", until you have completed the 34 hours off required for a restart of the 70.

Example: on 6/20 at 1900 hours I end my work day, and doing my log I find that I have worked (Line 3+4) a total of 69.5 hours. And I notice I have only been working since 6/15...6 days. I have 5 hours until 2359 (midnight), now I take off duty 6/21...24 hours, and on 6/22 I can start working again after 0500.
    05.00
    24.00
    05.00

    34.00
...and now I have a new set of 70 hours to work in the next 8 days...not 7days.

I can understand what his instructor was telling them, but not grasping the entire picture of the example, only using 7 days instead of 8.:biggrin_2558:

P.S. Hey there THD, in the future, don't refer to the 34 restart provision as "mandatory", as it isn't, it is actually an "OPTION"....it seems that the Teamsters Union is trying to tout this as a "mandatory" issue in the rules, trying to mislead the courts or the FMCSA, and attempting to get the provision removed from the HOS Rules and Regulations.
