Please obey locally posted signs. If you see a 12'4" bridge ahead and the TND does not give you a warning, take the sign as the determining factor.
Can signs be wrong - yes, but do not try to put your 13'6" trailer under the bridge to see if the sign is wrong.
Thanks,
Mark

Good Morning mark,
After taking the time to sit and sift through large amount of info in this section of the forum and rading over what few of the suggestions folks have added, I may have come up with a few that could definately not only help the driver, but also could potentially help Rand to not only move to the top in the food chain, but possibly help them to surpass their competition virtually over night.
We all know that the vass majority of Truck Drivers carry with them some, if not all of the following:
A Cell Phone, TV, MP3 player, DVD player, and just within the past few years, two way communications via satellite.
With that being said, what better way to serve the American Trucker than to be able to implamenta unit, weather through the use of a sd card or anthother form of portable memory card or on the motherboard, the ability to access portable video, Bluetooth technology (for integrated use of the ceell phone) and or, a dvd drive built it to watch a program (while the truck is not moving, of course).
We know that garmin, some of the tom-tom & magellin units already use the Bluetooth technology, but what many Americans do not know, is that there is a company over in china that is already using on their public hwys, a GPS unit that:
- Will take still photos
- Will record up to 30 min of video via a build in camera behind the unit facing the widshield
- will hold / store up to 4 hrs of mp4 videos for play back
- Stereo Audio
- audio & video inputs to accept a portable dvd player plugin
- Store upto 3gb of mp3
- full turn by turn audio directions in 40 different languages
- is fully progamable for adding maps for use in other countries
Now while I know that it was not designed for use in commercial vehicals, what a great idea for an almost all in one unit while navigating. the last time I checked, (about 6 months ago) it's US price was around $275 - $350. or somewhere around in there.
So it's not a matter of if it is possible for Rand, it's the matter of "Should", "If" & "When"?
IF I get a chance & can get the Mrs to show me again their website, I'll post that info here for ya to pass along to the higher ups. But as a previous as well as a future driver, I can almost bet, that, virtually every Truck Driver out there would want to have one of those, "IF" Rand was not only willing & able to get the current issues at hand fixed / corrected:
POI's, Correct Road Information, Correct navigation instructions, Correct Address information, correct weigh stations locations, correct road weight / height & bridge weight / restrictions information.
In my opinion, "IF" all of this were at the top of it's potential & integrating what the Chinese units already have, then the TND 700 units would be Very Well worth the $500.00 price tags that rand has on them.
Here are some of the units the Mrs had pointed out to me (Keep in mind that she is from china):

Just to name a few. (she's having trouble trying to find the website that she showed me) As soon as she finds it, I'll post itLast edited: Jun 27, 2010

One of the reasons Rand is not steering towards any type of movies being played is for safety reasons. With Laptops being on the edge of not being allowed due to the laptop being able to play movies, Rand wishes to focus primarily on the true purpose of the TND. Now you raised several different other aspects. I have a navigation device that will take pictures as you drive, but the unit falters in its true feature of a navigation device.
Battery, Rand build this primarily for in the truck, to help keep costs down they went with a battery that will retain power to the TND for about 30 minutes. They felt the TND would be used primarily in the truck on either AC or DC power for most of its use. If they went with a bigger storage battery the case would be bigger and cost would be affected.
POI's, Correct Road Information, Correct navigation instructions, Correct Address information, correct weigh stations locations, correct road weight / height & bridge weight / restrictions information. Rand is using NavTeq as it's base core mapping. Are their errors - Yes. But as explained before, this mapping data has never been truly verified and corrected where needed. Rand is aggressively correcting this data when given and verified.
I am gathering a list from this forum, along from the Beta Testers on features that a trucker would like. The list I have has about 70 items so far. Will they all be added - no, but Rand will look down the list and put them in a priority list.
From the production version, the current Beta Version has added a few more requested features already. Will some of the most recently added for features be added - it is very possible.
I cannot post the feature list I have complied simply posting it here will also let other navigation companies see what is being asked for.
Thanks,
Mark -
I have looked at a few, I would question the type of service you would get after the fact. What kind of mapping data is installed? What about version updates? How accurate is the mapping data?
These units seem to be build for cars. As a professional driver you would need more data for the vechicle you drive as well as more correct mapping data.
As far as playing movies while you drive. I highly suspect that a few would and this could lead to serious accidents.
So, buyer beware.
thanks,
