Loose-leaf logs ARE legal and a lot of people use them. The reason is NOT to enable drivers to run illegal, but rather fix common mistakes and make the logs look "clean" for the safety department, etc. We have a VERY poor system, and the DOT know this as well and DO understand! I have talked to many DOT who like them a lot actually. I, too, used them for many years. Many times I made a dumb mistake (in non-erasable ink of course) and have been able to get it right, etc.
So, what I'm saying is, amazingly enough, truckers are NOT perfect and make mistakes and loose-leaf logs are a good way to fix the common mistakes that have really no effect on legality at all, etc...
Loose leaf logs.

Very well said, that is another important reason I use them,I like to send in neat looking logs that everyone can figure out and read. I have myself seen drivers get in more trouble without loose leafs as all the mistakes needs to be corrected and initialed before the company can accept them. If the DOT can't read them you will be in trouble for sure''

Why? There is no regulation that states such.
Granted, if you're using a book, and 15 pages have been removed, a red flag may go up in the diesel cop's brain. However, all you have to have in your possession is the day you're working and the previous seven.
Read, memorize, and utilize 395.8 because if you can cite it, paragraph by paragraph, the diesel cops will be less likely to take advantage of you. -
2X is pretty correct in what he says. Many drivers do think they 1) can only use 1 log book for each month (NOT TRUE) 2) You must have 31 days in the log book (Not true as 2x stated)
Many drivers also do not believe (because companies believe you can't) you can use white out on your logs (BUT you CAN!) You should always initial your mistakes (no not a DOT requirment, but it looks better and it protects you) I actually had a team while the one driver was sleeping the other driver was changing his co-drivers logs, we found this out by the log dept because I was telling him to initial it and he said but I didn't change it someone here must have, and I said no, then we compared initials on the other driver and sure enough that's how we found out. The one guy thought for sure he was correct in the way logs should be and was changing the other drivers to "make them right" he was making them wrong instead. Ok that is me 2 cents. l.o.l.

Question here from the uneducated driver from downunder please.
Are log book pages not numbered in the USA/Canada like they are here?
The reason I ask is, if they're numbered, how do you get away with 'tearing them out of the book'?
Any reply will be greatly welcomed to help increase my very limited knowledge and understanding of what is, imho, a verrrrry complicated system that you guys/gals work with every day/night.
Keep on truckin'!

Yours are actually numbered? :smt103 Wow.
Nope, up here we get books of basically standardized log sheets that are identical to each other. Some are more complex, including a 7-day recap and vehicle inspection sheet, while others are minimalist in nature. Here's a sample of the Basic Log Sheet: CLICK
Man, that would be a real pain, having to account for every single page. What happens if you mess it up, the cat eats it, etc?
-
No they are not numbered. Many drivers believe the scannable log sheets are numbered because they have a bar code on them, but the log sheets are not numbered and it does not matter.
I am also suprised your logs are #'d! I say the same WOW! CRAZY! What is the purpose of having them numbered?
Now I would not mind having the log date pre-printed but that might be costly if all the log books do not get used that month, they would basically be trash.

As nearly as I can figure out, there are lots of differences between the laws here and down under, on many things, they have many ways to trip up cheaters.
