A strike requires planning, communication, meetings and a willingness of the members. That's hard to do when truckers are on the move constantly. -
Today I coined the week of 8/29 - 9/4 the "FIRST ANNUAL NATIONAL TRUCKER STRIKE" I call it this because no one will give us what we want on 9/5. This will be a long dawn out several year fight & this needs to be an annual event. This year, the best way is to hook onto Glenn Becks Restoring Honor meeting in DC on 8/28 because truckers need to restore honor to the industry, next year we can hold it in luisvile KY or NYC, I dont really care, but the week before Labor day is important for us to take back control of our Labor! Stop bickering & lets start planning!

If Anyone is serious about attending the DC rally on sat 8/28 email truckerstrike@yahoo.com
I will be attending & willing to meet with anyone interested.
Thanks,

Constantly saying "It'll never happen." is what I call Chicken Little syndrome. If it is said enough "The sky is falling!" people will all start wearing hardhats. No offense meant but, it's the same as those who key up and say " Wah, wah.".
Establish REAL solidarity and the threat of a strike will be enough.southernpride Thanks this. -
The problem is a lot of truckers have bills and if they would manage there money wisely and set a strike for a day or 2 days it would be noticed.I found out even being a company driver you can take part of the strike you just dont deliver the freight ontime and turn off the truck. I know they say it cannot be done, it can be done if every truck driver would come together for the strike.

to organise a business s big as this you first need some one to lead then you need a reason that will bennifit everybody not justa few it can be done but it will take a lot of money and time to put it together, money for support and advertising monet to help each other when the going gets tough and you can believe if and when it happens it will ge tough , the goverment will be aginst you big time they want to keep it the way it is or make it worse and they will , the big companys will be against you, most of industry will be against you your not going to shut down trucks ther is more to it then that it gets pretty envolved and most strike wind up in a shouting match between drivers yanking people out of there trucks and all that sort of thing will get you is shot been ther done that you got to figure out a bette way then that. that why nobody want to shut down they no what can happen and easier then you might think.
first you have to lead , then you ahe to organise , then you have to advertise , then you have to to have the right reasons and it can not turn into a personal thing you start that you have already lost before you start, then you have to have commitment from a heluva lot of people encluding the general public and that is just a start.
there is not a driver out here that wont agree that things need to be better or that there getting worse but you have to show EACH MAN what your going to try and do and don't forget the public you can't win without them and believe it or not that is the easy partutim not sure glen beck is such a good idea for leadership that is another story and if you continue with this strike deal remember this youi can not strike against the US GOVERMENT THE MARINES AR NOT NOTED FOR RETREAT wouldnt try it .
when you get all or most of this done let me know and ill do more then my part to help but i WILL NOT TAKE PART IN SHOWING ALL HOW BAD WE ARE bad is a dead horse.
best of luck southernprideNDBADLANDS Thanks this. -
Back in '79 Mike Parkhurst of Overdrive Magazine tried to organize, or at least assist in organizing a strike. It was primarily aimed at O/O's and independents as I remember it.
Then it seems like there was another strike of some nature again in '81 or maybe '82, again to the best of my recollection.
Nothing has really changed in 30 years... Fuel prices were too high, as was everything else. Rates were too low, but honestly it seems like they were better then than they are now, FSC not withstanding. Drivers working ridiculously long hours for pay that comparatively speaking seemed lower than what most any other job requiring reasonable skills and knowledge was paying.
Nothing changed. Except the publics view on trucking.
In '79 we were dead heading home from Atlanta to wait it out at the house, had the trailer doors chained open and a piece of cardboard with "M/T - GOING HOME" written on it taped to the inside of the passenger windshield. Twice we had people throw things off of overpasses at us. One time it was definitely kids messing around, the other time there were bobtail trucks lined up on either side of the overpass. ##########...
In the next one I remember hearing about a driver that was shot near Birmingham. The national news media all played it up as violence related to the strike, but if I'm not mistaken it was later discovered that it was a totally unrelated incident. Something along the lines of a beer route truck and the driver was fooling around with the shooters wife or something along that lines.
I'm not being negative here. I agree that there are a lot of things that should be looked into and that could and should be addressed. I'm just not sure a shut down or strike is the answer. And as much as I enjoy listening to Beck (I don't always agree with him, but he makes me think) aligning with him, or any one "celebrity" could be as detrimental as it could be positive.
Way back when while running with a few O/O's and ratchet jawing on the ITA channel someone brought up the idea of a demonstration and education process as opposed to an outright shut down. Things like signs that could be placed on trailer doors or sides that had short but relevant pieces of information that was easily absorbed by the general public as the truck rolled by.
As an example, and later on several of us had "bumper stickers" made that said "Please do not impede this truck, because it has to work to pay the taxes that subsidizes the railroad" and put them on the bottom of our trailer doors. Which had a more positive effect IMHO than chrome balls/nuts hanging from the bumper...
I don't know... Just thinking out-loud.Last edited: Aug 4, 2010
