well thanks for the info that the actual starting salary is 25k and you have irregular schedule and hence irregular sleeping time, it's good to know.

Hey gashauler, or any tanker out there, is hauling tanks easier? Not easy but you have more local right? How much time do you need before they will talk to you?

That's dependent on company policy. I started on chemical tanks right out of school. My company now requires 1yr to 18 months. Schnieder will hire trucking school grads.

I would't say its more local unless you go the gas hauling route.

Personally I would be miserable hauling gas. I like a mix of out and back(2-3 days) OTR with an occasional long trip(7-14 days) followed by an extended time off. That gas never stops flowing.

For the starting salary of 25k about how many hours is one driving per week in average?

Also in average about how much do people earn in 2nd year and 3rd year and how much are they driving per week?

lupe, the original figure of 37k is not unattainable, my first full year i made 35,900 pretax. however, my first full year, 2006(i only drove 3 months in 2005), i MADE more mistakes. I look back at it now, and it is hard to explain, but i know MY rythm. I am stubborn and young and fit enough that i made money either way, but i could see someone who doesn't want to push themselves that hard when the stupid runs come not making as much.

This is why people make less their first couple of years. I made that money with Werner, and although i would not want to work for them ever again, it gave me the experience i needed to look for a better job with better pay, down the road.

I think, anyone who is reasonably intelligent, and works hard, even at a total crap starter company, should be able to bring home at LEAST 30k a year, and that would be with home time every other weekend, if not more. The secret to the bigger starter companies is to get on a dedicated account, so you aren't just bouncing around aimlessly, hoping for work. It isn't there, and you are just used for whatever is left over from their regular dedicated lanes. Get onto a Home Depot or Lowes account, or something similar, and you will receive steady, consistent money, sometimes even with a weekly minimum guarauntee.

Why would you not want to work for Werner ever again? Which truck company do you recommend?

because of the up tight " never know what the future will bring so be scared and thankful for your job" mentality. they treat their drivers like mushrooms, keep them in the dark and feed them ########. You can make a Lot of money at Werner, but its not worth it. Werner Trainers almost kill themselves daily and still dont get paid as much as UPS or LTL Drivers. Why do this?

starting out, who would i reccomend? where do you live? you said something about michigan, correct? get your fast card and get on with a company that hauls steel. I have seen TMC trucks up in michigan with a bunch of axles before, so i think they do some local stuff up there. or go find a gravel train outfit and see if they will take you on. Any of these jobs should make you decent money, more than otr.

otr sucks, and there is no reason to do it at this point in time unless you are desperate for a job and nothing else is available. Trucking is backwards because otr, which should pay more, pays less, and local pays more. It is not that local pays too much, Just that otr does not pay enough. Most otr drivers will never touch the pay rate of LTL drivers, let alone construction drivers (cement trucks, dump trucks, end dumps)who get laid off every winter, so why do it?

First question is..What do you want to do?..theres ways to make good money from crappy paying companies..Like dry van..Wanna make running and extra fun money, dont pay lumpers, do it yourself..keep the lumper pay..I haul cars..Always has paid no less then 25% of the load..I make 30%..That equals out to about 70k a yr for me. the owner i work for, only has 3 trucks..We haul only new cars..Waganeer, is a great car hauling outfit to make money with..If you dont want to get out of your truck and work..Just want to drive and make money..Only experience and miles will get you that, with any outfit. Unless you do local, ie..concrete, end dumps, for aggregate companies.

that is what i would suggest, local driving with a cement or dump truck. it will pay as much or more than otr truck driving...
