Why would you even suggest that????????

    Not my job.

    I'm guessing you would have??????

Would it have been your job??????

It is ENTIRELY up to the shipper to ensure a HAZMAT load is ready to roll....that includes providing ALL placards required.

The drivers job is to ensure the shipper has done their job before accepting responsibility for the load.

That doesn't include providing or going for placards.

Had a doozy today. Stop a guy for speeding and the driver has a learner's permit. The fella sitting in the passenger seat has a class c non commercial license. The driver is a new hire for a fly by night outfit that the newbie stated he was learning to drive with his trainer. When I informed him his trainer does not have a CDL, he flipped out. Understandable I would agree. Newbie's log book looked fine, but the equipment he was driving was junk that I placed out of service. I guess the moral of the story for all the newbie's. Ask to see your trainer's CDL if your driving on a permit.

Actually, I would have only if i was getting paid extra to do it, for a minimum of 1 hour of pay. They probably just ran out that day.

Does the newbie get a ticket for the licensing issue? And wow, i didnt think any company was quite that lame..

I can only say that you need to know ALL the facts before offering ANY suggestions.

The company I drove for at that time WASN'T a bottom feeder and as such gave the drivers a LOT of on the spot decision making in regard to the load...how it was to be hauled.....was it legal......etc.

In other words...it was MY CALL. The only thing I did...as any driver should....was inform my company and let them do the dirty work of telling the shipper to do it correctly or get it off the trailer.

They got it off the trailer.

I know this is Dieselbears thread and out of respect for him, I'll only say this....

If more companies gave their drivers a bit more authority when it came to things of this nature instead of telling them to go ahead and run it as is.....he and his fellow troopers would probably have an easier day.

It is written that the shipper shall provide proper placards, period.

It is also a question on (practically) every HM endorsement test you may ever take.

Being a "nice guy" is one thing, bottom-feeder or not. Following the rules is quite something else, especially nowadays. If the shipper hasn't got their mess together, I shouldn't be expected to haul their freight.

My first year driving I had a placard come off the truck in a rain storm. I then realized that the reason those plastic covers are missing off 90% of the trailers is that drivers all have a supply in the truck. I do too since that day.

Your chances of finding the correct placard in a truck stop is slim. I was able to fashion one that looked good enough to get by the scales.

I have also gone to pick up an MT at my terminal that was to be top loaded. Placards were missing on 2 sides. I was able to find some correct ones in the trash can at the tank wash. Some times you do what you have to do.

Speaking of placards. I had a tanker today I saw with no placards on it. Usually this company runs gasoline, so I thought maybe it's cleaned and purged and returning to the terminal. Well low and behold I pull beside him on the interstate and I can tell by the tires he is loaded. Maybe a load of water I'm thinking. Wrong, 7000 gallons of gasoline and no placards anywhere. I ask the driver where his placards are and his response is......"They are not there?" Nope. Seems he just hooked up and never checked the trailer. :biggrin_2556:
