It seems with the first set of photos, you'd have a lower center of gravity, right?. How do you secure the coils on that?

I don't know about Tractor trailers, but running with a tri-axle when your loaded they have to be down, unless your making a turn then you obviously pick them up. I've heard with any load they must be down, but If I was light when I ran the flatbed, I would'nt lower mine.

Thats the way i run if i'm light the there up unless it's wet out then i drop the tags.

Johnday I tried to guote your post but it wouldn't let me. If you look at the pic there is a metal bar behind the coil. you move it against the coil and drop the pins in the holes. there is a bar in front also. With nthis set up you don't have to chain. But it is an expensive trailer

Oh by the way. This is the same set up rail cars have. There are some D rings also if you have to chain

Most guys I've seen with deep well coil trailers just use ratchet straps (that is if they use anything at all) Their so far down in the trailer you'd have to flip the truck over in order for it to come out, in which case the straps wouldn't do anything anyway.

coils are tricky beasts. If one ever moves you are generally in deep trouble. I've seen them break several chains just from someone stopping fast. With coils you always want to be smooth and gentle. We had our coil racks chained down and used skid mats and high strength chains and binders, and a couple of guys still managed to loose some coils.
