So today I finished chipping dry concrete out of a redi-mix truck for my new job. There was 3 yards in there. Is this normal? How many times a year should I expect to do this typically.

We are a small location so as a driver I am expected to do this as well as plant maintenance and minor truck repairs as needed. I don't mind doing it really, but sure would like to avoid it.

I don't have an answer for you, but I sure am waiting for one! On Monday I have an appointment to meet with what could be my new boss doing....you guessed it cement truck driver. I was thinking about a job like that because here it's seasonal & I want the winters off. But but but not if it involves jackhammers or anything of that sort! Awaiting further reply s.

It is a dirty job, but I don't mind. There are things called showers.

There used to be a guy here that was the resident cement "expert". I forget what
he went by but haven't seen him in awhile.

If you are chipping out your own truck, it is not so bad if you keep it from slabbing up in the first place. Adding calcium to the load will make it dry up faster and once it starts drying in your drum, adding water will actually make it dry faster!

Sugar is about the only thing I know of that will keep it from slabbing up. But yes, the concrete can be tough on a person. Wear hearing protection when you are chipping it out or you will wind up with Tinnitus (permanant ringing in the ears) like I have.

Up until I started working for this place the average age of the crew was 63. There is a guy who is 71 and climbs into the back of his truck once a week. Hard for me almost half his age to complain.

It is normal at some companies. Really important to clean out as good as possible after load. Our company had 4 plants and 200 mixers. They were all purchased new and kept in very good condition.

If your starting out with a company with older under-maintained equipment I feel for you. But even still there was a certain amount of chipping, we hired it out. Here they want drivers to driver... The only thing we have to clean it the inside of our cabs, and your expected to keep your trailer or drum as clean as you can thru on going practice as too how you unload. Never stop spinning the drum till after it's been washed out in the yard, keeping water in the drum on the way back.

Its not normal to chip 3 yds out of a truck. Some drivers don't wash down there fins all that great but 3yds seems like alot, thats like 12,000 lbs. Stuff does happen though, hot days, slow pours, accidents, drivers forgetting to get rid of leftovers.

I only chip out my drum maybe once a year sometimes every few years. My water hose kicks some butt so that might help. Some trucks have really crappy water pressure and it makes it hard to hit some fins.
