Like professor, software engineer, if they get into trucking and have trucking on their resume work experience, can you still get another white collar job?

I would surely think so. I mean it's not like becoming a hooker or crime lord.

After 20 years as an Intensive Care Nurse, in every field from Trauma to Neonates, I don't think spending time driving will lower my IQ. I still work part time in the NICU, and it is a nice break from dealing with 4-wheelers.

    andrew5184 and Texas-Nana Thank this.

Well I don't think it's gonna lower the IQ but the problem is the employers might not think so.

I would hope they could see it as being talented enough to be flexible in other highly skilled professions.

Some employers look at previous jobs in different fields as a possible "red flag" that you will leave them and move on down the road.

I might be in a 'special situation', but truck driving will probably add to my mechanical engineering resume. But at my age, I don't think I am going to worry about it. After trucking, I do not plan to work for anyone but myself and the wife.

When it comes to doing a resume, and you've switched fields for a time, and are now switching back, make it a functional resume. List your talents and skills, and highlight the time that you WERE in that field. There is no reason for you to use a chronological resume, especially if it doesn't suit your purpose or need.

I can't speak for professors, but as a former software engineer I can tell you that there aren't any of those jobs available anymore in the U.S.A. They've all been sent overseas to places like India, with the exception of something like an engineer who needs a top level security clearance to develop some kind of military application. The gov't won't risk sending those elsewhere, but in general the information technology field is dead in the U.S.

This is true on the resume. However when it comes to the actual application, then you don't want to leave anything out.

There is no reason why a person should not "take a break" from one field of endeavor for a bit.

The reason for the resume is to get your foot in the door for an interview. A lot can be explained during the interview, and your time away from the field will not count nearly as much as how you interview does.
