Retreads/caps are NOT allowed on steer tires on trucks either. Must be virgin tires on the steers.
Retreads are not the problem

I don't know anyone who does this but it's not illegal. Again more internet ball park facts that have flooded this thread.HA-MTR and HEAVY DUDE Thank this. -
It all comes down to a couple of things. In the first life of the casing was it run correctly inflated and maintained properly, was the re cap done properly in a clean dust free facility, was the curing of the bond done to spec.If all these things are done correctly re caps are reliable. In the air craft industry they cap the tires up to 3 times then land 600000lbs plane caring hundreds of people on them at 175mph. My experience is that caps are good if done on your own casings. If you run on hot roads and at high speeds better to go with new.
rocknroll nik Thanks this. -
Sorry to dispute you but from your own link I will bold out sentence E.
Miscellaneous parts and accessories
§393.75 Tires. (a) No motor vehicle shall be operated on any tire that (1) has body ply or belt material exposed through the tread or sidewall, (2) has any tread or sidewall separation, (3) is flat or has an audible leak, or (4) has a cut to the extent that the ply or belt material is exposed.
(b) Any tire on the front wheels of a bus, truck, or truck tractor shall have a tread groove pattern depth of at least 4/32 of an inch when measured at any point on a major tread groove. The measurements shall not be made where tie bars, humps, or fillets are located.
(c) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, tires shall have a tread groove pattern depth of at least 2/32 of an inch when measured in a major tread groove. The measurement shall not be made where tie bars, humps or fillets are located.
(d) No bus shall be operated with regrooved, recapped or retreaded tires on the front wheels.
(e) A regrooved tire with a load-carrying capacity equal to or greater than 2,232 kg (4,920 pounds) shall not be used on the front wheels of any truck or truck tractor.
the steers on a semi are to be no greater tan 12,000 lbs
12,000 divided by 2 is 6000 per tire. Section e. states 4,920 lbs per tire if I am not mistaken......ergo thus you cannot use recraps on your steers
So therefore it is illegal which is why all he cheap azzhats that own the companies can't use them....I know my cheap skate boss would use them if he couldRenegadeTrucker Thanks this. -
the recap industry had a bs rumor going around a few years ago claiming if you stop and inspect road gators and they have steel wires sticking out that it wasnt a recap that blew............the only truth to that is the fact that a cap cannot blow because it dont actually hold any air. they fool a lot of people with a few misleading statements. -

I think it's kinda funny that SEVERAL of the articles I just looked up state that there are "regulations regarding the use of re-caps, regrooves, and retreads" but for the most part you can only find the statute on regrooves.
But thanx again for correcting me. I just lump all that re stuff before the tire as re-fuse!! -
rocknroll nik Thanks this.

Any "study" that implies retreads are just as good as virgin tires is pure propaganda by the retread industry...its like Dracula telling you how secure your blood would be at his blood-bank.....
I would hesitate to put retreads on anything but a shunt truck or maybe dedicated equipment that dosen't leave the 100 mile radius from its base... -
