In Canada you can run Front tire recaps on Cement mixers and Pumpers, Garbage packers, and Mobile cranes, derricks, and drill rigs. Nothing else. 99% of those are the big singles.
Retreads are not the problem

edited to ad: 55mph probably does extend the life of retreads a lot. 15's & 17.5's dont seem to last long at much over 55mph either
however no one will ever convince me that if you take a new tire and run it 120,000 miles then put a cap on it that it will be just as reliable for the next 120,000Last edited: Aug 14, 2010

I got over 200k out of my trailer tires and they are on a spread, brand new. I got them getting capped now for one of the other trucks. I've always had good luck with caps and I run as south as TN. But I always use my casings.
Personally I don't care what other people want to waste their money on.
The caps you are seeing on the roads are usually from the container/railvan trailers. They will cap anything! I would never but a cap from a TS or someone other than my guy, unless someone I knew recommended another place and they trusted them. -
I hav wanted to get one for a long time, I have had a couple of friends who have had them, and I do know the tires on em wear out a bit faster and are a little bit harder to find. -
This is really what I think it boils down to. You can run caps, and you can have them be reliable if you are willing to run them half the year, not get them too hot, constantly monitor them, and use your own casings from the right "guy" and you will have good luck with them.
That being said, I got 380,000 out of the Michelin XDN 2's I put on my drives, I was getting about 110-130,000 out of the Michelins I was running on my 10'6" spread step deck.
To be bluntly honest, I was not being a tire maintanence guru all the time. I checked my air pressures once every couple of weeks if not once a month. I would regularily check my tires by thumping them, and giving them a good visual inspection when I was pretripping my truck.
I actually spent much more time making sure my brakes were well adjusted, and that my lights were all working, keeping everything greased and lubed, and I had very few issues.
On the flip side of that on the couple of occasions I had an issue (which were always on the trailer) I got a brand new pair of tires put on, and got on with life.
I was running 48 states, putting down a lot of miles, and I feel like there are a lot better things I could be spending my time doing than monitoring a bunch of caps... Like keeping the truck loaded, and finding partials to make some of that gravy money.
That is just how it is.
I can see how a guy who is more of a local guy who passes the same place over and over again might be able to run caps and not have issues or major inconvinance.
That being said I garuntee you when you go to sell a truck or trailer, having vrigin rubber on it is a major selling point, having caps is something some one is going to use to barter against you, and that my firends is where the rubber meets the road literally.BIG RIGGER Thanks this. -
I don't sell anything so I guess I don't have to worry about running the caps...

If you want to hear how extremely dangerous I like to be, I've got one grain hopper with RECAPPED X-ONES!!! It also hauls relatively heavy (as high as 97k gross) and has ran for 2 years with those caps. It also runs year round, even when it's 95* and has never had any tire issues. I also drink milk past it's expiration date and have been known to jay walk from time to time.BIG RIGGER, HA-MTR and Les2 Thank this. -
It's funny how a little new information makes some people all defensive. Oh well, I guess the saying about ignorance and bliss must be true.
