Hello, first post here. After looking on this forum for a while now, I have decided to apply to Driver's Solutions and drive for PAM. I have done nothing yet except apply online. I will call tomorrow, Monday. I am a 23 year old male. I feel this is a good move, but I am not sure about how they will take my misdemeanor.

I worked at Walmart two years ago and during this time, I was kicked out of my parents' house. There were no hard feelings, they just thought I needed to get out on my own. So I rented a room for $100 a week. Then Walmart cut my hours after hiring new people and I found I couldn't pay my rent, much less food and gas. I actually ate a can of my landlord's dog food one night, I was so hungry. Anyway, I started stealing from the cash register. Of course I was caught and prosecuted and got a misdemeanor. My charge was called "petty larceny".

This has made it very hard to find a job. Will the trucking industry be as hard on me? I am willing to kiss their #####, and do whatever it takes to make it as a trucker. I just hope this charge won't cause any problems.

Anyone out there who are drivers had a run in with the law? Did it affect your ability to get a job?

since the charges were not dropped, this will indeed remain on your record. when called for a reference a new employer will be told. when any trucking company does a background check on you, this will be found. this you cannot hide since the charges were not dismissed. otherwise, i would have told you NOT to mention this on any application.

now, petty larceny doesn't seem to have a huge impact on you, but it will when it comes to trucking and shortages. after all, you'd be in control of a virtual warehouse on wheels.

for you to find a job will NOT be impossible, but most likely improbable. i'd suggest you try a different avenue for employment, rather than waste your money on schooling.

    best of luck to you.

Sorry to say but it's going to hurt. The way most companies look at it is, are you going to steel from them. I retired from a major oil company and if you took one drop of gasoline you would get fired.

You might get through with some companies if their product or what they are hauling is impossible to steel. But WHATEVER you do go out and check the companies out BEFORE you pay for any schooling.

The charge was two years ago. I figured some trucking were pretty desperate and might be willing to give me a chance. I'm back with mom and dad and I really want to get outta here. I like to work and make my own money. I bartended for a while but they hired a pretty girl with a large following from another bar and my hours were cut. They always want girls for bartenders. I am going to go ahead with the application process and be honest. And hope for the best. Thanks.

Trucking companies aren't as desperate as you think. 100's of thousands of experienced law biding driver's are still out of work from the depression we are in. Why would they hire you over them?

this is actually what i was going to say.........but i was holding back a bit. it will be tough, no matter how hard you try. as i had said earlier, had the charges been dropped, i would recommend you do not mention them. however, do as you wish, but your chances of getting on with someone will be less than you think, and schools are churning out hundreds of newbies a month...........you really ought to try something else. some companies, (and i believe its Werner), have a lifetime ban on anyone with any charges against them...........i do not see this as relaxing any time too soon.........when one trucking company starts something, many soon follow...........

The only companies that would really look at him & possibly consider hiring him also have multi-million dollar contracts with Wal-Mart. PAM is one of them. Do you think they will hire him & take the risk of losing that contract?

Dude, if your serious... Check the flatbed side of the industry. They are a little more relaxed because to be honest.... How hard is it to five finger discount a 48,000 pound coil.

I agree with Redd and Rerun. You see you're thinking of the driver shortage from many years ago and you're viewing trucking as a lower form of employment that would take just anyone. Here's what you aren't realizing: you stole from your employer and any employer is going to see it as a possible pattern. If you stole from the register you might just steal a tv off the back of the truck.

Please don't think I'm saying you would.....I'm merely saying what might be thought when reviewing your application.

Part of what I use to do was to hire employees for large medical and dental practices. I never once even considered an employee who'd stolen from an employer. I did hire people with records but not if the crime had been done against employer or patient/client.

My recommendation is going to be a bit different than Redd's or Rerun's. I wouldn't spend your money on a school and then try to get hired by a company. I'd suggest you go through a company who'll loan you the money for your schooling and training. Yes you'll either have to work for that company for a couple of years or pay off the loan BUT you'll not be out the cash and then get told no job. Just a suggestion.

I wish you the very VERY best in life and salute you for changing your life and overcoming the past.

and of course he can try reefer companies, but then too, many wally worlds have food as well. and no, not too many companies that have contracts with wally world would even consider him, and by golly, there are indeed many companies that have wally world, pep boys, family dollar stores. i believe swift still has sears.

as i have said, a whole different industry for him, not trucking.
