I have been away from this thread for several months. I figured that I would wait till after the map update was done to come on and comment again.
I am still waiting.
All the changes and notes that were sent in by drivers over the past 10 months should have made a huge difference in the data.
I have waited and waited. And it is still not done.
I have owned this product for a year now. The last large update was enough to get me to keep the unit. I am use to it's quarks now.
But I would really really like them to FINALLY update the truck routes database.
You have 10 months of info. Given by drivers on the road.
All I can say is that there better not be a charge for it.
I paid 100 bucks more than the current rate for the unit. And I would be really really pissed if I get charged for a necessary fix.Chris6074, Mark Kling and Kimono_skunk Thank this. -
Mark,
I do heavy haul and I am wondering what is the best way to input a route that I must follow according to the DOT permit for a given state?
Any suggestions? -
I know the strict routing you get, but with the TND and permitted loads you will have to be a little creative.
I hope this helps.
Thanks,

forgive me if this has been asked already but i didn't want to read through 60 pages of replies. Regarding the weight setting on the unit. do i have to set it according to what im hauling ever load or do i just set it at 80000 and leave it? i had it set to 80000 and i was getting weight restrictions all through town. i was only hauling like 20000 but my gps was calculating for over 20 minutes trying to find me a route to take. is this normal? is there a quick set up guide somewhere that tells you some settings to change or anything. the guide with the gps is no where near useful. it says stuff like "weight-set the weight here length-set the length here. that kind of stuff is worthless.
Other then that im pleased with the unit so far. it does calculate a lot if you take a different route then what it suggests due to construction or what ever but other then that i like it. it did route me through a down town city in Texas when i put it on the shortest route rather then fastest, that was a fun 30 minutes of hair-pin turns no where near designed for a 70 foot vehicle.
so any tips, tricks, thoughts, ideas on how to get this thing to perform like it should would be great.
edit: i forgot to say i have the rand mcnally TND 700 gpsLast edited: Aug 19, 2010

The mapping database is made of road segments, with each segment having a set gross value of weight that can be placed on that part of the road. This involves a lot of factors, depth of the road being a major factor.
If you leave it on 80,000 and only weight 50,000, then the choice of roads could be more restricted. If you find you only run no more than 60,000 gross, then by all means change the setting.
Shortest will usually put you on US\local routes.
Fastest will usually keep you on freeways.
All I can say is take about 30-60 minutes and look at each screen and see what each option does. You can also access via the TND Dock on the top row\far right a more in-depth user manual.
thanks,

ok so ill change the weight according to what im hauling. thank you for clarifying that. yeah i keep mine on fastest now. the shortest had me going through back roads in kentucky down 2 lane highways. pitch black, no other traffic. if i would of broke down no one would of ever found me hahahaha.
Mark Kling Thanks this. -
I set mine at 79,900 due to a retarded error that doesn't equate 80k with 40 ton weight limits. It happens on the 500 and the garmin 465t. Pure sloppiness on the programmers part in my opinion.

The program looks at the truck attributes in the mapping database and thus figures if 80,000 set in the settings is above or below what the mapping database holds.
The code itself does not think each time a weight limit sign passes by. It strickly goes by road segments in the mapping database.
Give me an example and we can see what the mapping database holds.
If the road is not signed and other trucks roll on it does not mean it is fully 80,000 truck legal. Their are a few places where the road is legal at 75,000 and not 80,000, yet no signs are posted by that state's DOT.
Thanks,

I don't have exact locations, it's just a common error I noticed between multiple units. I think the, uh, other one, the 430, did it too. The only time I knew it was that specific error was when the warnings would come up and not long after I'd pass over a bridge that was marked 40 ton. Then there were no more warnings. Not something that Rand did, since all the units reacted the same, just something that stuck in my annoyance chamber.
And yes, I'm druck. It's my roomate's birthday and he's mixing the dirnks. This latest one seems to be made of rocket fuel. So the usefulness of my information may be limited for an unspecified period of ####.
