recommended to me by a Cummins tech to do the unplug thing...
Let the engine sit long enough to get totally cooled down, preferably overnight. Then turn the key on without starting the engine. Leave the key on for at least 10-15 seconds to make sure the EGR valve stays closed. Then remove the lower 6 o'clock postion plug that pulls out towards the engine block. That is it. Valve remains closed until you happen to plug the EGR back in. There are two plugs going to the EGR, only remove the lower plug. Make sure you tape off the plug and receptacle to keep moisture out.... seems if moisture gets in there, like during a rainstorm, it can throw a mess of fault codes (learned that one on my own).Joew900, scratch, Gears and 1 other person Thank this. -
Glad you posted this about the EGR. The truck we currently have has had an issue with this valve little did we know it had been replaced 8 times in the trucks life so far. Its a 2004 Pete with a ISX Cummings had we of knowen it was such a high maitance motor we would of never got it, well at least it still would of been a Pete just not with an ISX...

the ISX is the one you want ...the only one with a road relay 4 that will lock out the E C M ...good anti theft device . have one in a 01 fld120 w 20918 trans. very happy 6.5-9 loaded 8-9.5 mt 11-13.5 B tail....on the other hand the .370 rears I hate with a passion
-
Why do you hate the 3:70's if youre getting that kind of mpg's? 3:70's are good pulling gears in the hills you probably pull hills 5 to 10 mph faster than other loaded trucks with those rears.
-
6.5 to 9mpg loaded?? BS.
6.5 i can believe, 9 no frikin way.
wont even do that bobtail.
and according to the local techs, my engine is aparantley a good one ( i dont think so but they do ) -
Sorry you do not BELIEVE it . hope this pic I tried to down load will show you what milking @60mph will do. it was 10.4 mpg deadhead for 150 miles in no wind conditions. on flat places (Indiana). it is a 2001 pre-emissions. I use motokote. and some of my own minor modifications. I am not trying to trump up the figures. at first they seemed too high to me too. those are the highs and lows. this engine is doing BETTER on fuel than my old N 14 did in the same truck. drive safe ya all

I still have to run in the Rockies and the Hill Country of TX...
I don't care what you have...Running grades and backing off will still get you down to about 3-4 mpg if you are lucky.....
Good catch Dan..... -
...And if you have a new rig that displays the current mpg...Yeah...My rig will "get" to 30 mpg going down a 5% grade with my foot off....But we're talking averages here....
-
Hate to break this to you, but there is a company out there that hauls from Chicago to Cali with a Cummins 11 liter in their truck and they are averaging 8.5 mpg loaded.
