I drive an '02 Freightliner with a 550cat and an 18spd Eaton. The transmission grinds when I shift INTO NEUTRAL going for the high side. Another truck my company owns does the same thing only worse and that one is a 13. Anyone know why its doing this and what the fix is? Thanks

are you preselecting?----some of those old transmissions you cant preselect--but 02 you should be ableto-----maybe try not preselecting your range

It grind and its hard to move into certain gears too. On my 04 Volvo

the synchronizer in the back box and probably the synchro gear will probably need to be replaced. the friction material on the synchro is worn and grinding when splitting the hi/lo

My truck ('02) is a dream to shift. However the other truck that I mentioned is a miserable SOB. You couldnt find a gear in that truck with a road map half the time. Somtimes it wants the RPM's high, sometimes lower. Every driver in the company that spends any time in that truck is screaming and swearing within 50 miles. The grind between ranges in that thing is really REALLY loud.

Is that pretty expensive to have fixed? My '87 T-600 with the eaton 13 grinds just terrible from high back to low, would like to get it fixed before I have to use it to haul beans and corn.

well, it can be, I think when I use to do them at a dealership, it ran 5-7hrs labor, depending on the truck, and about $400-600 in parts depending on what all needed to be replaced. so to answer your question yes it can be.

So I'd be looking at about a grand to get it fixed or so. Well, I guess I got the tractor cheap enough I can put a little money back into it. Will it do any permanent damage if I don't get it fixed right away? I'd rather put a little money into it than ruin the trans and have to put a rebuild in.

well its not good to run it for a long time like that because you are not only making it harder to split by continually wearing the friction material, but also wearing the synchro gear even more. So its up to you as to how soon you can get it fixed, but there is the possibilty the longer you run it like it is, the greater the chance it will not split 1 day then you will be stuck in either hi or lo. Havent seen 1 in a long time like that but it is a possibilty. and from what I remember un less parts have gone up, $1100 or so should take care of the syncro and gear, unless when they get in there the countershafts are messed up or bearings or something like that, then of course its gonna be more. but I have 1 question, have you ever had the trans rebuilt, or know if it has, because if it is the original trans, depending on mileage, I would look into swapping a reman trans into it. If you plan on keeping it awhile, or know the trans has never been built since it is a 87. Just something to think about.

My redi-mix truck does the same thing. The company doesn't care so neither do I. It has been like that since I started and nothing has changed.
