$3500.00 for the truck in my avitar in 1976. Drove it 6 months and sold it for $4500.00. Went to work for a company driving an almost new truck delivering new furniture, and paid hub miles.

$20,000 98 Freightliner FLD with 358k miles, It was a great first truck and is still running to this day with zero problems. I now drive a Kenworth and love it but have only good to say about my first truck.

With a $4,000 down payment and $2000 for operating expenses, I bought a 1973 IH 4070A in Illinois for $23,600. It had 200 miles on the odometer. I leased to a carrier in Michigan, bought a Michigan base plate and paid Michigan sales tax. The carrier required premium steer tires, so I traded in the original first-line tires. I finished the monthly payments in 3 1/2 years, and operated the tractor 9 years and 920,000 miles. I sold it for $4,950. The tractor earned $5,000 annually after expenses and depreciation, regardless of recessions and layoffs. My wages came in a separate check except for one year when I was independent.

I started out as a o/o paid $15,000 in early 99' for a 95' intl coe with 400,000 miles on it. drove to over 1.1 million before replacing anything other than normal stuff. still original turbo on now. original clutch to just over 1.1 mil. inframe done 4 months ago at over 1.3 mil. I averaged at that time $1800 a week to the truck. as far as how long it took me to make my money back, I would say approx 3 months. give or take. if I applied my entire paycheck for every week it would look like I made my money back in 9 weeks, but take out fuel & any other related expensis 3 months. I do remember that the truck needed nothing when I bought it & I ran for over a year without putting anything into it besides oil change & grease. it has worked out greater than I could of ever thought possible, but I also could have lost the entire $15,000 too & I may have never recovered from it if that had happened.

In 1985 I bought a 1976 Freightliner cabover with a rebuilt 318 Detroit for $5,000.Spent around $2500 counting tags and insurance to hit the road.In the first 2 hours driving I " permitted" the truck in 22 states.Six hours later the new engine locked up.Spent weekend in KY,delivered my load late with a rented truck then hitchhiked home with $15 in the bank.
Ten trucks and two dumptrucks later, its still just about as much fun as it was then.lol
