I have a few questions for you...

What Bank gave you a line of credit? Do you understand how Logistics work? Did you take any DOT compliance classes. I noticed you are going to start off on a internet board, There is no MONEY on the boards.I hate to crush your dreams, by all means go for it but you must understand the risks. Some of those guys don't pay for 30-45 Days. Unless you can afford to front the money to your drivers first. I hope you know a few weeks after opening a D.O.T review will be taken, make sure the stuff you have is up to par.

I know one doesn't need a fancy College Degree to operate a trucking company, but it takes patience and alot more than the basics. It seems like your a young guy, I myself am too I am 22 and work in the trucking field. I don't drive, i handle paperwork and all that mess. Go on the road with your father a few times, get some experience under your belt before you operate. This won't your typical mom and pop small business.

Get your foot in the door, You can't run if you don't know how to walk.

    Goodluck Bud.

I started out doing a lot of research on the internet. Read books. Called lots of people and talked to people that are already doing this for a living. I never took out credit to pay for starting my own trucking company. I spent about $2,000 of my own saved money for Permits, registration,EIN, LLC..etc.) I never took any compliance classes, I enrolled with Foley Services, they keep me in check, made sure everything is regulation. They enrolled my dad in a random drug testing program. Made sure I have everything set to pass my audit coming up pretty soon. They're very friendly, they answer any questions I have.

There is decent money on load boards, just gotta know how to negotiation and get the best deals out from the broker. I started my business yesterday, it was my first day of operation. My dad is driving to San Marcos, TX as we speak, $2500 load (1121 miles) I take %10 and I already found him a good paying back haul. But I do agree with you, load boards do have many crappy rates. So thats why I decided to get my brokers licence soon, and start getting my own loads straight from the shipper. Give it to my drivers for better pay, and of course post some on load boards to make my company even more money. Hopefully all the hard work will pay off. I just know that truck drivers aren't treated right, I've seen companies with ridiculous lease agreements, only 75% for a load and the driver still has to pay for fuel!! And if the driver is leasing a truck and trailer, they are getting raped. It's a crazy industry.

:) Thats cool that you're working in this industry. What company are you working with and what exactly do you do?

You don’t need to get broker authority to have real contracts with shippers. As long as the trucks moving your shippers freight are running under your operating authority.

Back haul? You will make a good broker, you already know a bad word.
