I've tuned many Cobra 29's. And if was putting out 12 watts. You should've been heard. The FCC says all CB's are to Max out at 4 watts (most only do 2-3 when purchased). So your 12 watts was more than enough to get out. That radio is one of the best sounding true CB's on the air. It sounds like you had something turned to the left when it should've been turned right. I had a driver that worked with me. Always crying that he can't be heard. He had a Cobra 29 also. I would adjust the knobs on it. Everybody could hear me. But he would turn back the mic gain to about 8 o'clock. And come back with the same thing, I can't be heard. So could it be that your radio was set the same way? Or something else was/is wrong.
And factory coax is some of the worst coax on the market. It's right there with RS coax. Real JUNK!!! I would've look at the antenna system first. Because if your antenna system is bad. It can KILL YOUR HIGH POWER COBRA very fast! And because your SWR shows 1:5 it still could have a problem. That only shows at times. Such as when moving down the road.

You can take a 2 watt radio and key up sounding like a 70's cb throwback and you will not get a response, radio's fault ?

The 636 is as loud as most powered mics but does not have all the background noise of the powered mics. I had a new RK-56 but never really got to use it since someone broke into my truck and took all my electronics. Including a Connex 4300-300 that was only a couple weeks old. They also got a tuned up galaxy 959 and my Sparky Cobra Stealth and a spare astatic 636.

This is real simple, follow along class. The way a new untouched 2.5 watt radio looks like it is putting out 12 watts is call peak power. The FCC and every real tech measure RMS not peak, because RMS is a true reading.
Your 45 watt peak reading is really about 10 to 12 watts on a RMS meter. Usiong peak reading make it easier to separate you from your money.Mad Dog 20/20 and Big_m Thank this. -
I have a cobra 29 bluetooth and this is what i did to it
I had a new final put in
peaked and tuned
also had the frequencys tuned, first guy i had do up my cb didn't do that!!
ditched the factory coax, and got a good copper one, with a quality mount
wilson 2000 antenna
and a 250 watt linear
and had it all tuned and installed to work together
This radio is load, sounds good and the pre amp on the linear can really hear people far away.
when people ask what kinda radio i have i tell em a cobra 29!! its kinda funny i guess, if i knew what i know now i would have just but a stryker or a conex but im having fun with my 29 for now, when i get tired of it and upgrade this setup is going in my CJ-7 jeep -
Mad Dog 20/20 Thanks this.
