Sapp Bros in Peru, IL quoted me around $900 a while back with those Kaiser parts. 3-axle alignment was $169 with 'standard' adjustments if needed. For a truck stop repair shop they're pretty good and open 24/7...'cept for sundays they close at 10.

Thanks...that sounds more reasonable but I wonder what these Kaiser parts are that every raves about. I was told KW is plastic?? but that TC would use teflon. I have no idea who to believe until I see these things myself..

I appreciate the offer....too bad you dont live closer.

This thread got a little off topic but its all good info to pass along.

KW told me I had 5 things that were DOT show-stoppers. I wasnt 100% sure about that. For example: They told me my 2yr old 5th wheel was out-of-spec and unable to be adjusted. I found that odd. They also told me my rear-rear input shaft had excessive play.

I took it to TC for a 2nd opinion. They didn't know it wasnt my 1st DOT inspection. I said nothing. They agreed on the kingpins but they told me the 5th wheel and input shaft was FINE. I was worried it was a half-####### inspection so I questioned the service writer. He showed me the form, so then I chatted with the tech (really nice dude) - he told me he went over the entire rig and assured me those items were OK. In fact, he even told me the city horn didnt work (not a DOT issue) but that showed me someone took the time. (I knew it didnt work) - The relay clicks but the horn is DOA. I cant figure out how to get in there to swap it out. Maybe I should just pull the engine and then I can reach it easier. Either that or find some 5yr old neighbor kid I can toss in there with a hex driver. Its nicely located above the trans on the firewall. I might crowbar the thing off and relocate it using the wiring already there. KW gets $110 for a replacement city horn. I like the $8 one at Advance Auto.

    :biggrin_25521:

Until I fix the kingpins, I am not gonna run the rig.....other than around the area for 'test' drives as I continue to fix the smaller things I can afford.
My brake pads on the fwd rear axle were at the limit, so KW wanted a fortune...TC had a sale ($99 a side with parts/labor) but I opted for new drums as a matter of practice and that drove the cost up a bit...not bad though. At least they wanted my business. The cost was close to KW, so I told the guy "Why should I have it done here when the cost is the same?" - he responded that it was already at TC...I told him KW was across the street.

He paused - then asked if he waived the $70 shop charge fee, if I would have them done there. That worked for me.

I like guys that work with me and that appear to WANT my business. TC has been rather slow. In fact they have a sign out saying "NO WAITING - SERVICE" and that's sorta sad I think....The guy that did my DOT and brakes is the only one I will have work on the rig when I take it there. You could see he did a job with passion... Most of the guys at KW are in-the-door, out-the-door and sometimes my rig is worked on by different guys based on time of day.
Thats not conducive in my book. I would rather wait for the one guy to work on it.

I cant remember which shop it is, but I have heard elsewhere on the board that there are people who have had a lot of trouble with a kenworth shop in Wisconsin, might be worth looking into.

I have heard a few complaints on the Madison location and 1-2 on the Milwaukee location. So far, my personal experience?

    50/50

I am very impressed at the Parts person but the Service people? :biggrin_25521:
Each time I have brought the rig in they always tell me it wont cost much and they will just 'look' at things (like when I asked about my cruise acting up) - They are all smiles and happy.

Then, when I go in to get the rig - usually most of them seem to suddenly disappear. The ones left look everywhere but at me. Then I get the bill.
$285 :biggrin_2556: to check the cruise...
All they did was 'adjust' the clutch microswitch (I knew that wasnt the issue). It failed again the next day and they had the ballz to charge me $150 to revisit the issue - which they came back with a NO TROUBLE FOUND.

I had a fit. Refused to pay the $150, unless they could show they found something and had to replace part(s). Nope. I did get them to waive it but only after an argument.
Trouble on the cruise turned out to be a loose wire on the dash air PSI sensor (located on the service brake airline manifold next to the stop light switch). With the conditions I described, that should have been looked at. I found it on my own as I was searching for an air leak...

When I confronted the service guys?
"Oh you got a Detroit in that...we're not all that familiar with them as we dont seem them that often...Didnt know that switch was even in there"

    :biggrin_25521: - that's worth the $113/hr they charge right!?

So far I have not had ANY issues with Truck Country....but they only did minor work for me...

Well look on the bright side, now you know how to fix it and don't need to take it to them, and that puts you a step ahead of the game.

I wont take my truck to a shop for anything if I can help it, because I want to know it got done right the first time. And id rather learn how to do it than pay some one to fix something that may or may not get fixed right.

    blackw900 and Hanadarko Thank this.
