We use comdata fuel cards. I think it costs the drivers $1.50 or so for each non-fuel withdrawal, about the same as an ATM withdrawal. They get fuel discounts at certain truck stops, too.

I'm kind of shocked at the $10-25 per comcheck charge that you've been paying. Even off of a paper comcheck, our drivers only pay $2.90 per thousand dollars cashed, and that's waived if they buy fuel at many truck stops.

I'm glad to hear that you have a goal and a plan to stop using factoring companies. Having control of your cash flow is a major key to running a healthy business.

    Thanks.

Been playing on every load board I can get a free trial to use, just trying to learn how freight is paying and what areas are better than others. One of them I was on had criteria for "age", which I assume is for the trailer. Never saw this before on a load board, so it had me curious.

Looks like the trailers I had been looking at would still be good choices.

It sounds like she is talking about the fee charged by the broker for a "fuel advance". Most brokers will advance up to 40% of the gross for fuel, but they charge outrageous fees for said service.

Daveinjep, GM, Ford and Chrysler all require the trailer to be less than 10yrs old also.

Most companies I have delt with in this situation are happy as larks if you find the load for them. And why? mainly the people in your office are #1 lazy and #2 they take their % from the rate that you negotiate a win situation for them only, and you do the work.

A good company would have a number of re-loads ready for you when you have delivered your load.

If I was working for a company that wouldn't have loads or gauranteed rates in place, I would be looking elsewhere for work.

As a company driver I would be looking at a layover rate. There are many companies that do pay for layovers. As a O/O I would be looking at other options.

My Load Board is free and only has $5.00/mile freight direct from government shippers. Every Load is guaranteed to shorten your working life and make that 1 million dollar a year per truck goal a reality. Everyone who hauls our loads usually retires on their own private island after about 6 months of running. On top of $5.00 a mile, each load has standard $1000.00 per diem added to the rate and if you are detained for more than 10 minutes at the shipper or reciever you are entitled to a free chrome truck makeover by the Chrome Shop Mafia in Joplin, MO.
Have you ever heard of Donnie Schnieder or Jay Swift? They were a pig farmers until they found my load board and now they own some of the largest carriers in Mexico. Maybe you have seen their company? Schniedero and Swifto. I can't mention the name of my load board here, but lets just say that once you type the name of the site into your browser, you get $500.00 credited to your paypal account immediately and then you get $250.00 for everytime after that. Some people don't even haul freight off of our board, but just sit around clicking on our site and earn thousands a week! Hey just trying to help you drivers out. Anything I can do.

They also require the tractors to be less than 5 years old... it's a union rule that's been negotiated over the years.

When I was expediting my '95 Ford was too old to visit the auto plants as of 2000....

Nothing is stopping a new driver from doing that as long as he has authority to haul freight. If you are an O/O leased to a company, the company wants a cut, your dispatcher wants a cut, the broker wants a cut. Not much left over for the actually doing the work.

They will probably cover the load on their insurance but be prepared to lose around 20%-30% of your agreed upon rate to them, and they don't do anything for it but let you do their work for them. If you have to find your own return load maybe you should bite the bullet and go on your own. If it were me I would be all over them to get me another load back or pay my miles back home for another load. As it sits they already have your return rate calculated in the original load.

    Good luck
