I often wonder if the reason they do not is because of all the legal hoops you have to jump through these days. Or if it is a determining factor at all, I know from starting my business and having to deal with Unemployment, Soclail Security, Medicare, Sales Tax, and all the other junk you have to pay into or deal with it really takes its toll on you.

I am not saying what they are doing is right, but what I can say is I do understand the roadblocks that keep people from running a legitmate business.

That being said I have done it so there is no reason they cant either.

Took me over a day to read this entire thread. Very informative nonetheless. I hope if I ever meet DB, it's in the best possible conditions.

From my own experience, DB is no different than any other law officer. You can set the mood for the encounter just by your facial expression and approach.

Have your stuff in order, when asked for your log book, you should be able to hand it over without hesitation, you should know where your long form medical is. It is required we carry it and present it upon request. Keep your BOL straight and without coffee stains on it. And don't cop a 'tude. I've never had a crappy officer.

The key: Your 'tude. It will get you a ticket or get you out of one in many cases.

Some of it depends on the individual and what department they work for too.

I know here in corpus I have have a problem, we have a really good department here that hires really good people, and they pay at a rate that attracts lots of applicants. I deal with officers here all the time running the wrecker impounding cars, it has definately made me appricate what a good department we have here.

I even had it happen where a guy who is a retired cop rear ended me with his pickup, when the officer arrived to investigate the retired cop flashed his badge and tried to do the good ole boy thing, the officer told him to put it away and would have none of it.

On the other hand I get into "Other" areas around here, and I wind up dealing with less than desierable ones. I had one a while back write me a seat belt ticket while I was wearing my seat belt.

Right you are folks. I'm not saying you can always get out of a ticket by being nice. It just doesn't work that way. Usually.

But come boiling out of your truck, (or car or off your motorcycle), screaming "NOW WHAT THE 'F' IS YOUR PROBLEM?" and it will pretty much screw up a bit of your day. I was never a DOT cop, but they operate just like any body else.

I wasn't real big on minor traffic violations, but if I did have a reason to stop somebody and they became an instant arse hole. . .

Let's just say that I'd start looking for equipment violations, which I never did on a regular basis. I could write as long as they could yell. Usually by the time I got to the second or third ticket they would begin to get the idea.

Yeah, there may be a vehicle on the road that you can't find mechanical violations on. But they are few and far between, if you know what to look for, and are well versed on the vehicle code.

I say this from dealing with DOT at scales every day. I'm heavy, wide, long most of the time and I don't make many mistakes on permits but, it has happened because I'm human. Many times the officer lets things slide because I'm polite and will not argue. Yes I have gotten tickets but, many times just a "Don't do that again" I believe its all in how you present yourself.

I was pulled over by a CHP officer one time just itching to write me a ticket for something because I had mouthed off on the CB about him. By the time the encounter was concluded, he was laughing and joking with me. It was actually kind of a misunderstanding, but my attitude with him is what kept me from getting a ticket. It was an older Swift company truck, so I'm positive he could have found something on it...if he'd looked.

Years ago I was pulled over by CHP for running in the third lane. I tried to explain why and he said "I don't care if your grandma is in the way stay out of that lane" My reply: "How about if it was your grandma" He looks up at me and says "Good come back, get out of here" No ticket.

I have never carried my long form physical. Never been asked for it.
I have not carried my little cards they gave me when I passed my CDL tests for years either, I think I still have my certificate of road test and written test somewhere though. I seem to remember seeing them a few years ago.
Supposed to carry those too, but not many do.
I have been asked for my medical card, show them that any time they ask.
If they want the long form they will have to talk to my company, they have the original.
