Just for the record, the EEOC recently ruled that an employer cannot deny you employement soley because of a felony conviction, unless they can show unequivicable proof that you cannot be hired because of that. In other words, and HVAC company hiring someone to residential HVAC work who has a history as a sex offender, theft, or rape conviction.
In the case of trucking, a conviction for theft would not be a valid disqualifier unless you were carrying the cargo in the cab with you. However, this can be modified depending on the type of frieght hauled.
Old felony record

......been model citizen, no dui's or traffic tickets. Also had all my civil rights restored too. kept my ### squeaky clean. Been a hard workin family man and am tryin to get a job drivin truck. Every recruitment agent i talk to is nice n all till i try to explain my case about the felony then they cop an attitude as tho i'd did somethin to them personally. they dont want to hear me out they just tell me NO HIRE and hang up. If anyone knows a co that has no problem hiring a hard workin ex-felon, or info i could use I'd be grateful.
Same thing here for a rollover. As I hear the logo, oh, insurance won't cover you, I want to ask, and how many accidents have you been in yoyo? Like someone said
earlier, the company who takes you isn't going to be a good one. So you tried
cr england and got refused? Really? -
fuzzy,

I have a felony from 28 years ago and the two companies that have pre hired me are Swift and CR England.
I am going with Swift. -
But, being an ex-con myself, I understand how sometimes you just gotta take what you can get until you better your position. Ten years since my conviction and just over 4 years experience and a squeeky clean MVR and I still get the song and dance. But it is workable. Stay with it if you really want to do this. -

HI MY NAME IS JASON NEW TO THE FORUM, HAVE BEEN READING ON THE FELONYS BEING A FELON MY SELF I HAVE SOME QUESTION. IT STARTED AT A YOUNG AGE I WAS A LOST CHILD. GOT INTO SOME TROUBLE AND AT 19 YEARS OLD MADE A HUGE MISTAKE AND ROBBED A DRUG DEALER FOR MONEY NOT DRUGS, BECAUSE I MOVED HIM FROM ONE ROOMS TO ANOTHER I GOT CHARGED WITH ARMED KIDNAPPING AND ARMED ROBBERY. AND THEY CATEGORIZED ME AS A HABITUAL OFFENDER. NO DUI NOTHING ELSE. I GOT CONVICTED IN 1995. GOT OUT 2005 FINISHED MY PROBATION 4 YEARS AGO. I HAVE BEEN WORKING FOR THE SAME COMPANY FOR 5 1/2YRS AS A TOW TRUCK DRIVER. HAVE BEEN AN EXELENT EMPLOYEE AND MY BOSS CAN BACK THAT UP. UNFORTUNELTY PALM BEACH COUNTY FL PASSED AND ORDINANCE LAW IN JULY 2010 NO HABITUAL CRIMINAL FELONS ALLOWED TO DRIVE A TOW TRUCK. NO GRAND FATHERING IN NOTHING!!! LOST MY JOB !!! I LOVE DRIVING HARD WORKER AND MUST FEED MY TWO DAUGHTERS. I APPLIED WITH CRST SCHOOL AND WAS DENIED. SO WANT TO SEE IF ANY SCHOOL WILL TAKE ME AND HIRE ME?. SHOULD I JUST PAY FOR MY OWN CDL SCHOOL AND TRY TO FIND A LOCAL JOB? ANY INFO WOULD BE APPRICIATED.
THANKS
JASON -
well jason, it will be a rough rode for sure. many companies do have a ban on felony convictions, some are lifetime bans, of which maybe you ran into. in any event, if you can get financial aid, maybe trucking school is for you. however, you still might very well run into the hiring problems. being down where you are, try to see if an owner-operator will hire you. now they do not pay well, and usually no benefits, which since you have kids, you really would need health benefits.
you can still try applying at some trucking companies that rain you, and then you work for them. Swift, PAM. TransAm, TMC, to name only a few companies. but too jason, not every company will have freight lanes where you live, so this could also be a reason for anyone denying you a job/training........so it may not always be the felony conviction holding you back.
good luck, and keep us updated. -

I got my CDL training at community college. Federal grant money to the county family and jobs service (welfare dept.) got me into school and paid for everything. It was a hard row to ho but I got on with a smaller company (less than 100 trucks) and got my feet wet. There are companies out there that will hire you but getting the CDL first will get you in a better position. Just don't think that it's going to be easy. Your gonna have to know this is what you want to do and take the bad with the good when your looking for a driving job.
Good Luck.
