Okay, a recruiter called me today and wants to hire me to run PPG dedicated for JB Hunt. I have 9 months experience OTR but am currently unemployed. This is the offer: 38 cents/mile out 11 days then 3 full days off. So every other week I'd come home on Thursday and leave out Monday. I'd have a dedicated route serving only PPG accounts. The closest terminal Columbus, OH is about 8.5 hrs from where I live. I was told I would drive the truck home for my off time.
3 days off every other week sounds almost too good to be true. He emailed me all the particuilars even after telling me them over the phone so I do have a written record with his name on it. If this was a lie or a bait and switch scam I doubt he would've sent me the email.
I've read a lot of negative comments on here about JB and before I ship out to Columbus and turn down the offers from others (FFE and Western Express), I just want to know what the masses out there have to say.
Is this a scam? Does anyone know about the PPG gig? Any help would be appreciated.

This is not a scam. I was on the account for almost 4 years. But you need to know they don't usually get you home till Friday. You do get the full 72 hours off from the time you get home, not the time you are dispatched home.
Pay is ok. Now you may have to go to Canada. Not sure if they still do it or not. And you will pull hazmat quite a bit. They are a good place to work for regardless of the crap you hear. But they are sticklers for rules. You WILL not violate hours of service laws, or other DOT rules and regs. If they try to make you call safety immediately. As long as you can prove your point I can guarantee some heads will roll. I saw 47 of the 48 states with them. But you do have to spend the 11 days out and if you stay out more you get 1 extra day for each week out. I stayed out 4 weeks and got 5 days off and they let you take them b/c you earned them. No can you come out for this or that. If they ask you to you CAN say no. They may not like it but nothing they can do about it. But if you scratch there back they will scratch yours from time to time.
I ran a lot of short routes because some people would ##### about it and my FM almost always made it up to me somehow or another. Better to be a short route than not moving at all I always said. But they usually keep you moving. Very rarely sat.
Give em a shot.Mike2633 Thanks this. -
What is PPG?

I too have received offers from JB Hunt that seem too good to be true compared to what the other companies are offering. I'm very skeptical. What's the down side?

I just hired on to a JB hunt's DCS account here in Michigan about 5 month's ago, so far they have been everything promised and more... the miles are there every week, they have worked with me to get me time off for a funeral during my work time, I will say again they are very tight on the rules and logs, no goofing around,, do it right and legal or find a different job... seem to be great on service too, truck has been in twice for B-service since I have been here and I am just short of 50,000 miles in the time since my hiring... the best, worst job I have found so far

Okay I started this thread nearly two years ago.
I've worked on the account -PPG (Pittsburgh Paint and Glass) since Oct 2008. And now I'm looking for a change.
I did like it a great deal for a while. Jeff Strayer who used to work on PPG was a fantastic FM. Unfortunately he transferred in April 09. He currently works for JB on the Aurora Trailer Parts acct out of Lebanon, IN. I would love to work for him again but since I live in PA I can't transfer to the Aurora acct.
Unfortunately the crew they got planning and dispatching at PPG now are pathetic. There are no miles any more. When we had the automotive glass we always got 600-1200 mile runs over the weekend. Now lately my weekend runs are 200-400 miles and sometimes even less.
The contract with PPG is up for renewal Jan 2011. Regardless of how they want to spin it, there's no guarantee that JB keeps the acct. But regardless I've concluded that my current FM is incompetent and the night guy (Nathan) is an arrogant rude arse.
I want to stay with JBH as their medical benefits are good and at a very low cost. I also would like to keep my vacation time. I do think JBH is overall a very good company. However like most large companies your income, home time and job satisfaction comes down to the job your fleet manager does. Mine has not got me home on time once all year. Has given me bad plan after bad plan that do not work with my HOS and even though I stay out 4-5 weeks at a time and manage my time well and have never had a service failure I can't seem to average more than 2000 mi/week. This is unacceptable in my opinion and I think I've exhibited an extraordinary amount of patience and tolerance. But as I said it is time for a change.
They are in need of drivers in their intermodal division. So that is what I'm going after. If for whatever reason they don't grant me the transfer, I will do a job search outside the JB Hunt family.Mike2633 and RookieJ1987 Thank this. -
all the intermodal guys i talked to seemed happy

i worked for jb hunt/ppg dedicated for 4 months,it just turned into a big disappointment. they did give me a nice,no flaws freightliner.got me home every 11 days for 3 days off. but they promised 2200 miles a week its more like 1600,i quit when they left me at wichita falls,tx for 4 days waiting for a load at a ppg plant, then my ac quit in 112 degree heat. the ppg dispatchers seem ok at first, they send out countless safety messages, long boring dribble about the smith system, backing, they make sure you know about all the accidents company wide. they talk a lot about the deadly days of summer, dazed and deadly, statiscally friday is the worst day for accidents and deaths, why are you here if youre not willing to drive safe/ those are all their words. they force you to send out a daily safety message,if you dont they will shut you down, really strict on logs.it seems that jb is looking to violate you and get rid of you, everything about them seems tense, uptight, they want you to live in fear.their truck maintance is good, terminals clean, gated, break rooms.

PPG stands for Pittsburgh Plate Glass. I know a lot of people say Pittsburgh Paint and Glass but that is not right. It is Plate glass.
Mike2633 Thanks this. -
Who was the load planner when you were there?
