I would like to ask if anyone has any experiance having a semi truck to use as a hauler for a 30 to 40 foot rv hauler. Should I go with a flat top mid roof? the prices they are asking for 1ton dually crew cabs and medium duty just seem so expensive.
semi as a rv hauler?

Also would I have to pay the HVUT if I register it as an RV?
-
The HVUT comes in at 52,000 lbs., I think ...if you make it a single axle I don't think you would have to pay it.
You are so right about the cost of light duty trucks... ridicules. A good, older flat top or mid-roof would work great for you.
I'm not sure what you will need as far as a CDL... I think California requires them now but I'm not sure of other states.
Try an RV forum...you should get some answers over there.goldwing daddy Thanks this. -
Goldwing,
There may be an issue about brakes in some states. Not sure what they use now on RV of that size...surge brakes?? Electric??? Seems I recall mention of using an air brake vehicle towing an electric brake trailer was a no-no. I see it done regularly but you might outta check that out.goldwing daddy Thanks this. -

I do have a cdl a. Most rv trailers are electric. My concerns are is there not enough weight for air truck/electric on trailer. The trailer I am looking at is 42 foot with triple axle and 13000 dry weight. I was thinking of spending about 30 to 50k for a truck( this would buy a new 1 ton but I would rather have the extra HP and torque). I would also like to know if I should remove 5th from truck and use a Rv 5th or goose neck.

My Dodge has enough electric to activate them, then the semi will also.
As far as the 5th wheel, I think they are different. Contact a RV dealer and ask them on it.goldwing daddy Thanks this. -

I've hauled 5th wheel campers all over the country, using an old freightliner big truck.
I do Not agree with that article, I'd rather have a good dodge dually.
The only advantage was the power, and you can get by with the 1 ton.
There is no comparison, if you can do a ridealong with somebody, you'd see what I mean !!goldwing daddy Thanks this. -
I use to use my old truck on weekends to haul my 45 ft 5er to the dunes. I wired in a break controller after that all I have to do is slide the 5th wheel all the way back and go.
goldwing daddy Thanks this.
