Yeah, your right Johnny. I have never really put any though into that. I'm sure Tlea or Emulsified would have some info on that though. Did you decide on where you are going to go to school?

Roadmaster is the only game in town. I'm probably making my sales agent over there crazy. I was going to start school on the 5th. but decided to check and see if the state would pay for it so until I get that checked out I'm on hold. I need 2 letters of intent to hire or pre hire letters for them, unemployment to send the request for a voucher in. I have one from Covenant and I'm waiting on one from Stevens so if that comes through it's back to the unemployment office to see what they say. I'd much rather them pay for school then going more into the red on plastic. I'm hoping that the Steven's letter will get here tomorrow so I can make the trip Monday. They are only open Monday and Tuesday in the WIC dept . I also like having the pre hires before starting school, takes off a little stress of finding a job. But if they aren't going to pay then I'll more then likely start the end of the month or beginning of Nov. Might as well get that driving in snow out of the way at the start.

I have worked with several people in the process of getting SSDI (in my volunteer capacity), and probably have more feeling for the process than most lay people.
Unless you are terminal, missing both legs or both arms, I can virtually guarantee that ANY application for SS disability will be denied the first time around. Just the way the system works.
Probably figure they save money because more than 85% of those people will go away after the first denial.
You must be unable to work in any gainful employment capacity in order to qualify.
So if you're missing both legs, but can work at a desk in a wheel chair, you will be denied. Even if you can't drive due to this and you live in the middle of nowhere, you will be denied. (they'll tell you to move)
Each decision is made after a SS doctor's review.
Each review is subject to appeal.
About half the appeals will win.
The average disability amount paid is around $780 per month, plus you will be eligible for medicare.
So the short answer to your question is: If the heart condition is bad enough to keep you from driving a truck, but not so bad as to keep you from selling trucks...you won't be eligible.TLeaHeart Thanks this. -
I am over 50, and both sides of my family have had heart problems. My take is live my live the way I want to, eat healthy, which can be done on the road, enjoy life, and I DON'T expect anything from the government when I am no longer physically able to do this job. I will move on, as I am self responsible.
I have catastrophic health insurance, that has a $5000 deductible. The $5000 is in a Health Savings Account, that I can use for any medical reason.
There is a big difference today between people who were raised to be self sufficient, and all the people who have been indoctrinated by the public school system to depend on the government. And so many don't even realize they have been indoctrinated.
A young person asking about SSDI bothers me. What are you looking for an easy way out at my expense? The government has no money, except for that which they TAKE from those of us who do work.
Sorry for the rant, I will now return to Trucking. -
I arrive for class on the 18th. Who know, if not at school I bet we meet up on the road, good luck to both of us -
Log books, Is Stevens using paper or Electronic? Just curious. I hear a lot of talking about getting re-powered. Sounds like it happens fairly frequent. Is that a good, not so good, or just part of the deal, miles are miles. My recruiter even mentioned that. Asked if I had any problems with re-powers. Not knowing one way or the other my reply was, miles are miles as long as I get enough. She seemed to like that answer.

And please spare me the right wing political BS. I'm not here to debate political views.
Just for the record I've been working since I was 13 years old from caddying at the golf coarse to picking fruit and vegitables on a farm to pumping gas(check the oil and wash the windshield and sweep the cigarettes butts off the lot, remember when) , stock boy, mowing grass at the parks( no self perpelled or riding mowers), spring factory,Fork lift for Pepsi, Insulation installer, Form Carpenter's laborer and then helper, US steel (coke works and rolling mills), Electrician 30 years(19 non union and 11 union), videographer and CNC opperator and I also build and play guitars too to name a few. I know what hard and quality work is and I pay taxes too. And being a single guy pay more then you married guys with kids. I was also raised on SSI because my dad who also served in the Marines 1st. Div. WWII and recieved a purple heart died when I was 2 leaving a wife and 2 sons. I'm glad this country has social programs to take care of and help people who are in need of it. That's MY tax money going to a good use as expected.Last edited: Oct 8, 2010
iowarider and Delirious Nomad Thank this. -
I hope this area doesn't get hijacked into a political debate. There is actually a place on here for that.

To Johnny: I hope everything works out for you! If it wasn't for my brother co-signing for financing into school I wouldn't be able to do this! I have a job already but it absolutely sucks!!! I'm sick of the medical field and selling equipment through medicare is gonna go into the crapper very soon, as in the first of the year. So I am taking on the family trade! As for the snow, I am very interested in driving in snow and ice, seeing as I have done it maybe a handful of times lol!
TO iowarider: If you get in on the 18th then as long as you stay on time in school then you will be doing orientation with me (I think) See ya there! As for the re-powers, that is a term I wonder about. I thought it was when you hand a trailer off to another truck. Some tell me its when you change truck and trailer. So I'm a little confused on that myself.... -
Well it's not so much the snow that's a problem other then clogging the roads durning a heavy storm as it is the ice and freezing rain. One reason I left PA and moved to FL was to get away from the iced roads. Although I've driven / crawled through snow where you could hardly see 15' in front of you,Think of the FL rain down pours but only white and fluffy and slower falling, pretty much zero visability. No fun just like fog almost. But that was some 30+ years ago and I was still a bit young and dumb. I can imagine that a trailor behind you loaded adds much stress to an already stressful situation. Your and others safty comes first. I'm sure your familly can clue you in on it.
