My $.02 - per diem, child support, taxes..

If I was a person thinking of getting into trucking .o0( ohhh wait I am).. :

If I didn't know a lot about human nature or clueless to the world around me:

This forum would make me stand up and go "Hmmmm, maybe I should stick to I.T.".

Whether you call it whining, ######## or venting it seems to be the public image people see.

To the original poster here: Humans are not designed to being alone for long periods of time. They are not supposed to be sleep deprived. Human anatomy is designed to be up during the day and sleeping at night. Our bodies need sunlight to help produce Vitamin D. Vitamin D is essential to the production and breakdown of Calcium our bodies need to keep that heart and brain you have functioning. Truckers run till they drop or the DOT catches them.. Totally against human nature.

When you sit and think for hours on end, and deal with road idiots all day you need to vent/#####/whine. Would you rather they do this in public or on a forum where no-one will get hurt/killed. Before anyone comments, I drove ambulances and fire trucks for 22 years I know road idiots..

If you don't like the whining/########/venting skip over their posts. There is a lot of great info here for new people like us. Heed it or not.. That is your choice..

Now I will go sit back in my corner...

Only thing I have against the above is "All humans" while I agree with the vitimin D thing, EVENTUALLY people can get used to things, I worked graveyard for 6 years, never saw the sun but maybe 6 hours a week. After two months I could not be awake during the day etc.

    People adapt.

Just curious mind you, but how much room in your truck is taken up by medications? Doesn't matter what meds.. If you're on meds. than you body did not adapt as well as you thought..

30 years of I.T. and 22 years as a very active volunteer paramedic it took a major concerted effort for me to stay out of the classification of "Better living through modern chemistry".

Did you know flashing lights on the roof of a vehicle make normal people do some really strange stuff? :biggrin_25523:

It is called (among other things,) "Light Bar Fever" or "hmmmm, I seem to remember something from the driver's manual telling me what to do when I see those lights. Can't remember what it was, so I will just slam on my brakes as hard as I can. . .":biggrin_25524:

I worked shift work for many years, with varying types of rotation. Then I went to a night shift and stayed there. Once I got my life switched around, it was a hell of a lot better than the rotating shifts. But it is hard with an active family. . .

Oh yeah, did you know that studies (multiple) have shown that the heart rate and blood pressure of the driver increases with the use of the siren? It is one thing that most EVOC will cover.

Totally off topic, but here goes.

I once had the cops show up at my house. I was working 3rd shift, and had a woodpecker drilling a tree right outside my bedroom window, it was driving me insane for days on end. I shot at him several times with a pellet gun. Never did hit him, he'd just fly away and then come right back. Finally I had had enough, grabbed the shotgun, and dusted his little punk ###. #### and feathers flew every where. One of my do gooder neighbors witnessed my act of violence and called the cops.

Cops showed up and were pretty serious at first, even had me in handcuffs for a bit. By the time it was said and done, we were all laughing about it, and I had even made myself a new hunting buddy.

Come spend as many years as i have and several others have out here and we"ll see what your attitude is like at the end of 20 yrs. I hate to be harsh but you sir have no clue what it "used" to be like and what it "is" now. I'm not saying i hate my job or career but its not all fun and games like most "outsiders" think it is. I wish you well in your new career choice but don't come here complaining about drivers opinions voiced on this board when you have no knowledge of the industry. You're 53 yrs old and have obviously had a career in "something" up to this point and are thinkin of leavin it for whatever reason. No different than this career, alot of guys/gals are leaving this business EVERY day for one reason or another.

I was heading to a man down call on a narrow two lane when the car in front of me just stopped. He did not pull over, he just stopped. The car in the opposite lane stopped right next to him. Neither of them stopped safely so was forced to thread a 5 ton angry Type III ambulance between the two of them, or hit one of them.

Thank God for EVOC training and yes I know their Blood Pressure and Heart rate were elevated.. I was waiting for the follow up EMS call for two drivers in Cardiac Arrest...:biggrin_25523: It was really close.. I am sure the paint one of the two cars blustered up from the friction..

Hopefully I will never have to do that with 50+ tons; though, I know I'd hit the ditch first..
