I do that quite a bit, since I bobtail several nights a week to run to Walmart or go out to dinner and I am allowed to run the truck home on the weekends.

However, even though I am on line 1, I do flag it that I am using it for personal conveyance. Not sure if that is actually required or not, but I figure that it will simplify any issues that may ever come up with DOT or my company about how the truck got from one location to another.

    How about this.
I drive a dump truck. I haul x number of loads to a paving company. The truck is being paid by the hour and I get a percentage of that. After being signed out at the jobsite, I drive back to our shop, empty and not being paid for this time. Could I log this driving time back to the shop off duty?

that guidance that was posted is only talking about driving to or from a your terminal to your house empty

I want to know about driving with a trailer hooked up hauling stuff for yourself such as some atvs on a camping trip or hauling firewood for yourself etc...

where does it talk about this in the handbook?

also do you have to start from your terminal to not have to run under HOS as personal use or can you start a personal use trip from anywhere?

the key word is PERSONAL...if you drive your own rig, and NOT INVOLVED IN COMMERCE...then your log will show Line 1 (off duty)...if you have a company truck/trailer, then check with the log/safety Dept. of your company to see what their guidelines are....just remember....PERSONAL CONVEYANCE!

You can even get away with parking a bobtail in your yard by going to court and saying its your personal conveyance. It worked for me twice in Arlington VA when a cop wrote a ticket for parking on the street in front of my house.

The dump truck falls under the 100 mile rule. You wont be driving that truck beyond the 100 mile radius from where you park it. The 100 mile rule allows you to operate up to 14 hours per day.

As opposed to the OTR, where it is only 11 hours per day for commercial loads (unless you encounter adverse conditions and can claim it to get an additional 2 hours beyond the 11).

Its called personal conveyance and can be logged off duty, you do not necessary have to be bob tailing, but your trailer must be empty if your pulling it.
