Help from Houston, Texas

Schneider has a terminal in Houston, close to where I work. You may have to do a little OTR to get the experience... so you may have to be away from your family for a little while until you can land the job you really want. Which college did you go to for the training? How did you like it?

 

Normally, folks go otr prior to landing a local job. It's possible, but could take a long time or very long time depending on the job market in your area. You have to consider Houston is a huge city so the companies probably have drivers with years of experience applying for the same local job you are applying for.

Sometimes ya just gotta pay your dues over the road. I am looking at the same situation myself. You may want to check out Roehl's 7/7 plan, you would be home 26 weeks of the year.

 

Have you looked into Schneiders bulk division? Being in Houston, you might get by the house quite often, according to what some are telling me.

A friend of mine's son went to work for them. I ask him how his son liked it a couple of years ago and he said it was a job, but he really didn't have any complaints.

 

You won't come straight out of school and into a local job. not very likely anyways. sorry. You need to earn your chops on the road because lets face it, you really don't know what you are doing yet. Local companies want to to be out on the road learning before they send you out in city traffic doing all the stop and go and backing up a local driver does all day.
mabey look at waste managment or something, that's about all I can think of.

Keep looking, take a job on the docks where theyd allow you to work up to driver, there are 2 million people in Houston and 1 million trucking jobs. I started in NM hauling hay and grain, salt and protein blocks, went to bull hauling including shoveling trailers ou and changing tires. Wanna shovel out a 53 or 54 ft bullwagon?
