I am a new driver; I just graduated from a College in Houston, Texas. I am not having any luck with my search for a job. I am looking for a local or a regional run that would result in no more then two days away from my home and my children. Within the past week I have had two men at two different companies tell me that, I did not qualify for their driver positions, because I had no experience. However, both men were eager to let me know that they had clerical positions available within their companies and that I was welcome to come there and fill out and app for that. I was appealed when I was told this. Just today I had a woman tell me that I sounded too sweet and nice to do that kind of job. I am starting to rethink this thing. Also I am getting very discouraged at this point, because I know that there are woman truckers out there, I have seen some of you, but yet and still I am getting the runaround here in Houston. Everyone wants six months or more experience, but no one is willing to give it to you that chance. I am willing to take any job in trucking that I can get, even if it is flatbed I will take it. In school we did not train on flat bed, but I am sure I can do it. Any Advice For Me?![]()

Normally, folks go otr prior to landing a local job. It's possible, but could take a long time or very long time depending on the job market in your area. You have to consider Houston is a huge city so the companies probably have drivers with years of experience applying for the same local job you are applying for.
Sometimes ya just gotta pay your dues over the road. I am looking at the same situation myself. You may want to check out Roehl's 7/7 plan, you would be home 26 weeks of the year. -

Have you looked into Schneiders bulk division? Being in Houston, you might get by the house quite often, according to what some are telling me.

Try this company. It is physical work delivering food to small stores, gas stations, etc.

A friend of mine's son went to work for them. I ask him how his son liked it a couple of years ago and he said it was a job, but he really didn't have any complaints. -
Thanks for the "Grocers Supply International" tip, I will be going there this week.

You won't come straight out of school and into a local job. not very likely anyways. sorry. You need to earn your chops on the road because lets face it, you really don't know what you are doing yet. Local companies want to to be out on the road learning before they send you out in city traffic doing all the stop and go and backing up a local driver does all day.
mabey look at waste managment or something, that's about all I can think of. -
NEVER EVER GIVE UP, Thats half of Bear Bryants motto. Keep looking, take a job on the docks where theyd allow you to work up to driver, there are 2 million people in Houston and 1 million trucking jobs. I started in NM hauling hay and grain, salt and protein blocks, went to bull hauling including shoveling trailers ou and changing tires. Wanna shovel out a 53 or 54 ft bullwagon?
