Don't forget i went to the same school. And the testor i had, told me what was acceptable and what wasnt. I mean you can't just back in 3 ft of the trailer and say you're done......lol......yeah thats a fail. but put 2/3rds the trailer in, and just stop. you get a point for shopping short, and a point for not being in the box. that is better than 2 pts for going out the back and a point for going 'out of bounds'.

ahhh Wyld, you're going to be so great on the road. You're not going to give up but keep hammering until you get it. The break and then the extra time on the range will be great for you just keep your optimistic look.
Soak in the tub, lay by the pool, paint your toenails and read some naughty romance books. It'll do you a world of good!
And then have a stern talk with yourself about not allowing certain people to intimidate you. I had the very same problem. I got for my testor a man who absolutely intimidated me. People were horrified that he was going to do my test. Yet after my test he was so kind. He spent about 15 minutes just talking about attitude and believing in myself. He told me this "many women are intimidated by the whole process when actually they make the very best drivers".
I've come to the conclusion it's a good thing to get testors that intimidate us because then we've learned to keep focus while driving. When on the road or making a docking there's so many distractions and it's good to learn focus.
You keep plugging girlie! -
and Wyld, when you DO get on the road, and driving solo, it'll be a matter of months before it just starts to come natural. you'll know what will work and what wont. the more practice you get the better/quicker it will come to ya later on.
remember, its better to be ahead of the trailer than behind it. (hahaha....guess that works with backing, and driving)pagan22 Thanks this. -
Thanky kindly Nana...I treated myself to a shampoo an style today...which is really big for me lol. Dont paint my toes an pool is closed so that came close. I am not going driving solo, Hubby is out there somewhere coming to rescue me soon as I graduate an we are teaming. He has alot more experience than me and will definately let me do alot of alley docks...hopefully where no damage can be done for awhile...til I "get it" as everyone is fond of saying lol.
I have a fairly good idea on what to do...I just need to practise and fine tune it to the "get it " point.
I put it in the hole 4 times in a row so my hands know something I dont...I just gotta get them to tell me their secret!
Luv u gyspagan22 and Texas-Nana Thank this. -
I had a fun time reading through this thread. I know a bit more of what to expect when I start school. It's nice to know that there are other women in the trucking industry driving because not all female drivers are fail.
I wonder what I'll be like when backing.
Good luck to you Wyldfyur. I'm rooting for you to pass. =)Wyldfyur Thanks this. -
I will be going to orientation with Swift on Oct. 25. I live in North Texas about a half hour from the OK border. I heard that there was a very low turnover in the OK City terminal and that they had a very good planner there. Does anyone know if there would be any advantage going to the Oklahoma City terminal instead of the Lancaster terminal, or would it not make much of a difference. I just want to get off to a good start and put myself in the best position to succeed.
Nana, I know that you're from Texas. Could you give me any advice? Thanks in advance for all your help. I hope you're all doing well.
FrankWyldfyur Thanks this. -
I am from Texas but I moved to AZ. I'm out of the Dedicated Wal-Mart fleet at Casa Grande and before that was with the OTR fleet in Phoenix. I don't know much of anything about Lancaster or OKC. I've been to both terminals but that's about it.
In fact I've been looking for some infor on Lancaster myself in case we move back to TX. LOLWyldfyur and TexomaYankee Thank this. -
Well I decided off the bat that I would be honest in this thread...lol...evidently its turning out to be brutally honest.
We had another female in our class who is doing well. I have a suspicion her O/O hubby, who drives for Swift, gave her some lessons, cause she never had a problem backing when all the rest of us did. I had plenty of opportunity to get lessons from my Hubby but we knew it was against the law and Swifts policy to let me drive without a permit. Swift asked me if I had my permit before we left and at the time I didnt. They said they would have held it for me til we got back cause I wasnt allowed to be in his truck if I had my permit with me. I can totally understand and played by the rules. But thats oky...I will succeed and learn so I really know an get better over the years.
I am glad you enjoyed the thread...not every females experience will mirror mine...but again I wanted to make my experience as honest as I could.
Texas Nana has a wonderful thread of her own...an she struggled also...fortunately for me it is cool this time of the year...I dont think I woulda survived in the heat like she did...she's my heroine!
But watch out for her big stick rofl -
I had kid in my class who had never been in a truck before, never driven a clutch. But he grew up backing his dad's boat onto the ramp. Best backer in our class, even did a blind side parallel park. -
Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
