Is the 8v92 the same motor as the 318?

No, the "318" is the 8v71, completely different engine.

The 92 series began as a 430 hp..don't know about any current ones, if there are any. They had one sorta special edition called a 00-92. It was called the "double O 92" which stood for owner operator and was rated 435hp. That was somewhere in the early or mid eighties if I remember correctly.

How good of a motor is the 8v92? Pros vs cons

Does it have the ummph to pull up good size grades?

Both Detroit 2 strokes, both V-8s, but the 92 is 21 inches displacement larger per cylinder giving it roughly 168 cubic inches more displacement.

The 92s started at over 400 horsepower. I knew of one in a milk truck that had 475 horsepower which was pretty good for the size of the engine.

They had oomph, but aren't the most economical engines, they also dripped oil when cooling off and warmimg up, only time they didn't drip was when warmed up and running.

You'll go deaf driving it long term. That may or may not be a drawback, depending on your wife.

Watch out with the 8v-92 I've worked on some buses with them and they have are a picky engine As 25+2 stated they eat up Oil like a mother and if u aren't very very on top of oil level they will seize up or throw a rod very very quickly. I'd rather an 6v-92 over an 8 less torque but the v6 wouldnt blow the hell up like the 8 is known for!

The 6v engines did seem to cause less trouble than the 8v.

Back in the 70s, a O/O had a cabover Pete with a large sleeper, and a 12v71, engine.

He claimed he got picked up in Nevada running 118 mph with it, and it would go up a certain hill loaded just like a normal truck would do on the level loaded. Those guys running the big enfines when asked about a hill always asked 'What hill?"

The big Terex earthmovers ran 12v71s turbocharged with 550 horsepower, some had a 671 on the back pushing, too.

The truck would only be used locally so mpg isnt to big of a concern.

So as long as I keep the oil level at the proper amount they are a pretty reliable / long lasting motor?

So I can get a prospective how much oil would it use in a week or month?
