he hates his job!

Your hubby is in OTR shock! He is just realizing a complete life style change and it can really take a mental toll on people. Both schools and recruiters don't really prepare or tell you the truth about what your day to day life will be on the road. It really takes a solid three months to get acclimated to being a truck driver. The first week is definitely a shocker though. He needs to take a few breaths, relax, and then man-up! Otherwise you just wasted $6000 on a license because it is extremely tough to get a local job with no experience. Plus I would just as soon stab myself in the eye with a spoon then drive local in Atlanta! On the good side if your husband is complaining about his trainer snoring that means they are running pretty slack! Thank his lucky stars his trainer is running his butt! If he was a stickler that truck wouldn't stop for sleeping and snoring! Overall though I think your husband isn't thoroughly prepared to be a trucker. It will be different once he has his own truck as long as he can muster through the training. Threaten him with divorce if he doesn't stick it out for at least three months. He needs to at the very least recoup is school money. Good luck!

 

Well; heck I hate my job. I been off the road just over a year. What is mine. At home shock?

 

Missing home was not my problem my problem was my mentor, complete jerk. I was out 7 wks and it was the second hardest thing Ive done, The first was the Marine Corps, I did exactly what I did in the marines shut my mouth, learn what I could from this jerk and get through it. I never complained to anybody wife, company etc. Just kept focused on the light at the end of the tunnel and knew as all things do it would end and by god it did. I didnt spend 5 grand to quit and as life goes I knew it wouldnt be all roses, Tell your man to be a man and figure out if he likes it or not after he pays his dues. I agree with your advice to him about 3mos

 

as an industry insider......he will have to put in at minimum 2 years of over the road before he can even begin to think about getting a local job.

 

In addition: if he doesn't like/doesn't back well; he won't likely enjoy a local job. In addition to much more backing into tight spots; local requires many more stops in a day. which is a lot more backing than otr.
Also, if this has been a goal for your husband he should be able to look beyond the short term annoyances. It is what it is.
If he doesn't like it now; maybe he'll tough it out n enjoy it...but if he "hates it" now; time to look at another career change.

 

OTR trucking is not for a married man with a family. Unfortunately your husband is now locked in to it for a year at least if he wants to do anything decent in trucking. Too many wannabes/newbies chalk up the many posts about the realities of OTR trucking as ¨being negative¨ or look for some other fault with the poster. They overlook the obvious, being an OTR trucker sucks on many different levels.

 

He's venting all of his negative issues to you because you're the only one he can go to. It's your job to keep him motivated and let him know everything is ok at home. If you give any negative responses back to him he'll be home in a second. You've got to let him know everything is ok and stick it out and it will all fall into place. Then after some time like a year or two he'll know if it's right for him. It would be a shame to throw all that money away for training because he doesn't like the job only after a week or two. I'm sure you know how to calm him down and what to say so it's up to you. If you want to tell him some negatives tell him what it would be like if he quits and was at home with no job. Trucking involves the whole family and not just the driver. It's your turn now.

 

Being a "househusband" really does suck. But shoot, you can always dig out the old vacuum cleaner or mop the kitchen and clean the bathrooms if you get bored!

Take up cooking as a hobby. Get in that kitchen and make a mess! You just might find that your "creative" side has been hidden all these years, thinking it is all "wimmin's werk!"

OK, I'm gonna go away and hide for a bit, until this schidt storm that I have started blows over!

 

I remember my first couple days trucking. I was MISERABLE!!! Didn't have a CB, cell phone minutes were $1/min roaming so I didn't want to call anyone.

It's a hard job to start off in.

But like I did in the military, if you stick it out, it gets better. And he'll look back at these days and laugh.
