at first I wanted an automatic, however it didnt take long to getv shifting down pat...I dont think Ill ever drive one now, I like the way you can use your engine to properly stay in control of your truck

I admit, I didn't read this 15 page long post.... bad girl..... but if you don't want to take the time to learn to shift, don't drive for a living. What if you want to leave that company? You'll *never* pass a road test. What if your truck breaks down and you have to get a rental? You're screwed. It ain't like a manual car, you won't just "figure it out." Grinding and jamming all the gears ain't the way to go, learn to shift.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Sounds like some people are afraid to learn the art of shifting. And yes, my friends, any good shifter will tell you, it IS an ART. There's nothing like those gears going in perfect.

WOW, maybe if you had bothered to read the 15 pages, you would know that we already discussed this and are in agreement that you should learn to drive a stick even if your going to drive an autoshift

So how do automatics perform as opposed to shifting gears? What has been your experience? Pros...cons.

as stated many times, an autoshift is a manual that is controlled by a computer unless the driver puts it in H or M mode and shifts it him/herself.

So why would automatic not be better? In this day and age it seems as though work never decreases..less shifting....less work...how is that not a good thing? or is it just better to be able to say you were capable of shifting through a bunch of gears to get to your destination?
Just trying to understand why easier is not better? Seems to me that there is nothing "sissy", as some drivers say, about driving an eighteen wheeler, automatic or not..It doesn't bother me if what I drive is auto or not....My male ego never gets in the way.

Just finished 75 hours in the Volvo w/Auto. I have driven stick (10 and 13) and like to shift, however I can't find anything wrong with the auto. Max weight through Kentucky and WV I think would have shown some issues if there were going to be some. My only issue is being governed down to 65. But that's not the auto's fault. I did notice that my legs and shoulder aren't stiff. So go ahead and hate the auto if you like but you should probably drive one for a while before dishing the crap, which is kind of like you should learn to shift before you embrace the auto.

    striker Thanks this.
