went to the freighliner dealer here in slc and he said without at least 2 yrs expeirence you cant get a loan approval for a lease and need at least 5 yrs exp to get a new truck... if this is so i can see why truck company leases are so attractive to new drivers...

any lease drivers have any input on the atbs company that handles you books when you lease.?

Leatherman, there were several drivers on the JCT thread that used ATBS and were NOT very happy with them. Might inquire over there and ask what problems they had.

Love Bosselmans and their free wifi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One reason for the companies being able to lease to newbies is because they are third party leases and when you go belly up then the company takes over the lease payments until they get another newbie to keep the seat warm. Also some of the big carriers have their own insurance. Well at least you saw for yourself that leasing is not a good idea for new drivers. I think that 's a pretty big red flag that if an outside reputable company won't lease you a truck until you have 2years then it is a good idea to hold off until you do have a few years behind you. Plus you are going to want to build up a good bank account before leasing anyway. As you are driving as a company driver pretend you are owner op. Keep track of everything you do and see how you make out. Your truck and insurance including permits, and qualcomm are going to roughly be $1000 a week. Keep in mind you have to pay out of pocket for scales, tolls, truck washes, breakdowns, maintenance, etc... I think Central is paying around .86 a mile for owner operators. So maybe use that as a guide. Be sure to keep track of fuel and deadhead too. Companies like Central don't pay fuel surcharge to their owner ops for deadhead. There are some hidden fees too that you don't think of such as an accountant and truck parking. Both are going to run you $60-100 a month.

See how you do. It will give you a good indication of whether or not you will want to make that leap later on.

Anyone know anything about CRSUP, Castle & Cooke/Continential Refrigerated Services, University Park, IL (Chicago)? I will be there tomm. no problem but delivery isn't scheduled 'til Thursday at 1300. Could be a drop facility as it says don't take empty R trls out of there? Milt says he doesn't think it is?

Their Central Driving Academy is Certified to do the CDL road test. You have to go through their school in order to obtain your CDL through them. Its a 2 week program with 3 days of orientation at the end. You have to go out with a trainer after that time for 4-5 weeks and then you work for Central and they will help you pay back your loan for the schooling.
