...Yeah the union jobs usually pay better than those private contracted districts, and the towns are usually better than the state jobs. But the pay scales really do vary from town to town.I've seen anywhere from 17G-62G in dirty jersey.Full time school bus driver is also a great gig if you can land it,lots of OT doing sports runs after school and weekends.Double time Sunday 26x2=$52 per hour,12 hour day=$744.Lots of these guys double their check every week doing sport runs. Also eligible for sport runs are the Grounds crew and maintanance staff(Plumber, painter, carpenter, mason, electrician)Anything that they don't want can go to a custodian if they have a school bus driver endorsement(never usually happens).
...Back when I started 1976 I made $8,590=$4.13 per hour, now I'm making $26+ per hour.I pay 1.5% of my salary into my benies, which are BCBS PPO,family dental 100% up to 2,800 per year per family member.100% paid scripts for myself, family scripts paid 80% by BCBS.
...The only thing that really sucks is getting called back in for snow removal at 6AM, after you just got in bed;but that is OT and you get one hour of OT for a callback, plus whatever you put on the clock.I pray for storms that end on Sunday(double time)Saturday is only time and a half.
...Don't just wait for a job to get posted, put applictions in to whatever district you are interested in,a lot of these jobs get filled without hitting the classifieds. And make a pest out of yourself, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

Yep, I was an elementary 2nd shift custodian. I know what ya mean about the day shift though. I worked it many times because the day shift guy had a ton of sick days and wasn't shy about using them. I pulled a lot of doubles covering his shift and mine both.

You make 56gs? Wow I made no where near that and that's another big reason why I left was the high stress and low pay. I don't think our highest paid custodian made over 40g.

    Gee.

Is it any wonder that so many cities and states are going bankrupt?

I like it! But the job security is no longer there;we lost 8 guys due to budget cuts last year and there is renewed talk about privatization of our department. If it happens,I'll take my pension$2,500 per month plus guarantied benies for life(available to anyone who has 25+ years in)and find another job till I can get my SS check. We have a governor who hates the public school union NJEA and has made it his mission to attack all public school employees every chance he gets, our state aid went from 5 million to 1 million this past year, hence the 8 guys cut.Our Superintendent got his new contact signed before the salary cap on Superintendents pay went into effect(I think he's making 250G plus benies with 3% raises for the next 3 years)talk about sharing the pain.

You can only buy years of service if you are a veteran.I probably could remain a union member after privatization but what would be the benefit?I don't need any more years as I already have 33 years in,more than the magic number 25, required for free health coverage for life. And at 56 I get paid $8,500 for unused sick days(they pay $85 per day for up to 100 days) I have 250 sick days accumulated ,everybody keeps telling me to call in sick and use up 150 days but I'm never sick(took 1 day last year). We don't pay into NJ disability insurance so our sick time covers extended illness; although if you're injured on the job you can collect full pay under workman's comp.

oh ok, you are basically home free......

but i'll tell you what, they can always mess around with the sick pay stuff. my dad's place they did, my former trucking company (union) did as well. they can make you take them or lose them. or they can (with a vote of course) re-word the next contract, or there may be a clause in your current contract where they can change things if economic conditions dictate, something like that. in other words, start taking some time off, the school (sadly) will still be standing when you get back. just a thought or two, that's all.

    whosedog Thanks this.

Oh god no, that is the worst job I have ever done....I quit after one shift as a janitor....so #### boring.

You could not pay me enough to be a janitor......I would almost work for free driving a Peterbilt....hell I almost do....but it so darn much fun to do....
