I will be quick about my experience on the midwest regional. I joined roehl in August fresh out of truck driving school here in Illinois.
Evo 1 and evo 2 went fine. had 3 good trainers and 1 bad trainer. Then i got offered a job by a local company but ended up turning it down after roehl said if i stayed they could put me on the midwest regional so i could get home weekly. I thought sure after all the local job would only pay $500 a week..
My 1st solo launch i left on a monday morning. By wednesday they sent me into Toronto Canada. ok i thought no big deal ill take the extra $50, then they sent me to New Jersey, then North Carolina. By the time it was all said and done i didnt get home till the following tuesday night. (time spent 9 days) they gave me a whole 36 hours off as i launched thursday morning. My first load takes me to Delaware which is way out of my region. Then they make me go to Toronto again, then back out to new york state, then new jersey again. by this time it was wednesday (my 7th day out) i asked when i was gonna get home and my fm said he was working on it. So I got a dispatch to take me to northern New York so i rejected it and i called them up. He told me he doesnt know why im complaining it isnt out of my why its just north. ( i live about an hour sw of chicago ) they said they had no freight going my way, but i still told them i wouldnt take that load. Then magically a preplan popped up to take me directly home to deliver 10 miles from my house. I got home on friday ( 9 days out ).
i got a whole 36 hours off again and launched sunday morning. All in all i actually got home in 8 days ( following sunday night ) and got 2 days off, launched wednesday morning. Finally got some loads in my region. then on wednesday ( 8th day out ) i was in the omaha area expecting to get a dispatch home. Instead i got a load to atlanta 1,100 miles total and 700 miles from home. When i asked why i got this load and they said its so they could get home for weekends from then on which i thought was an excuse to keep me out..
i get to covidien in atlanta friday (just this past Friday).. they then get me a dispatch to north vernon indiana at the lowes dc. Which i get to yesterday. 200 miles from home on my 11th day out. they tried to give me a load to pick up 300 miles away in missouri. They claimed it was my load home but it delivered monday in iowa.. I rejected it. The weekend fm told me that i should feel lucky to work for roehl and they work hard to get there drivers home.. I told them that i wasnt doing it and that i was getting tired of this bs.. they told me to just go to home.. so i told them i was going to gary to turn my truck in and that i didnt appreciate taking a 2 cent pay cut to get home weekly when i dont!!!
they told me they could give me a hometime fleet so i said ill do 7/7 and they said ok.. So if this doesnt work out im done with roehl..
I was supposed to be home every 5-6 days, i was never home in less then 8.. You are supposed to run in your region 80% of the time, I ran maybe 50% all to make a high pay of $0.265 a mile..
the only good things about it was that I did average 2,300 miles a week and i usually never waited for a dispatch..
If you are gonna go with roehl stay away from regional!!!

Welcome to trucking!!!! It hardley ever works the way you want to when you first start out. It could be worse though, you could have went a company that would never get you home.
It will get better for you. Let us know how it's going over there for you..
Keep your chin up.metallifreak10 Thanks this. -
What's the problem? They said they'd put you on "Regional"....and they did. Northeast Regional.
-
Sounds like the North American "region" ...
Don't expect very good money on 7/7 and it's slip seat I believe as well.
Hope you don't mind cigarette smoke odor. -
Roehl has such a horrible freight base that they really can't keep thier promises. Most the time they will use broker loads to get a driver home.
-
So what's the local company in Morris...?? I'm down river a bit in the L-P area...just curious.
-
why the complaining? Most newbs are out for weeks # a time, your getting home weekly! If you want to be home you should have taken the local job.Why would you hire on with an OTR company if you do not want to be on the road???????Stop the b i t c hen
Azrael and THE ROOKIE Thank this. -
You FNG's kill me, the only thing you didn't complain about is "a new truck" . If you want to be home on a certain day you should have taken the local job. If freight ain't going towards your house guess what? You ain't going home! As far as the rate per mile, you agreed to that when you took the job. You ain't gonna start at top pay with no experience anywhere. One last thing, If you think that 2300 miles is good you are in for a rude awaking if you actually go to work for a good company. I wouldn't last a hot minute if all I was getting was 2300 miles a week.
THE ROOKIE and Azrael Thank this. -
What used to be called local is now regional.
What used to be called regional is now half the country.
What used to be called OTR is still OTR and then some.
I'm afraid nothing else has changed much in the truckin biz there bud. -
What used to be called local, is now regional in a day cab - and paid by the mile.
What used to be called regional, still is ... only a thousand miles from your house.
What used to be called otr, is 6 months out with 3 - 400 avg mile runs.
