on flats we haul equipment(logging, farm), steel (plate, sheet, coils, i beams) pipe, brick, stone, lumber, plywood, drywall, etc.
on national you can expect to average about 2500 miles a week,=10000 a month=120000 a year. When I did national I did shorter runs (400 miles a day) during the week and longer runs over the weekend (1000-1200)miles. Where you live is fine. Anywhere along an interstate east of I-35 usually works. You also live close enough to Gary if national doesn't work for you. You could do regional or 7/4 7/3 or 7/7. As far where freight goes, well it goes all over. We used to constantly be in the steel mills around Gary shipping steel to the twin cities. I guess they are putting steel coils more on trains more because they are safer to ship that way. This is fine for me, it seems like there is more variety now. Last week I took a hydraulic loader (logging thing) down to tx. Then I took siding to New Orleans, reloaded steel coils off the docks there going to southwest GA. Then I loaded plywood going to OH but I dropped that in the Ellenwood, GA yard. I picked up structural steel north of Atlanta going to MN but I dropped that in Marshfield and went home.]

Thanks for the feedback and all the information.

I am looking forward to getting to Marshfield on Sunday and getting things started.
After spending hours and hours on the trucking forums and checking out many differant trucking companies, Roehl does seem like one of the top companies for a new driver and expeienced drivers as well. With as much research as I did I couldn't find too many bad things about the company.

I plan on showing up with a good attitude and an open mind and try to learn as much as possible.

Here I thought my husband was going to be done with orientation. I hear from him today to find out that orientation was cancelled because there wasn't enough people for the class. Still waiting.

 

Hey guys, My husband just finished his orientation for roehl in gary indiana, he is an inexperinced driver and he leaves for evo 1 training tomorrow. He will be running in the midwest regional fleet and I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how often I can expect him home and how many miles is typical of that fleet. He will be working out of the dayton ohio base. Thanks guys

 

Hi, I was wondering what kind of engines Roehl has and how much horsepower, and how they are governed.


Also curious if they are really all 48 states or exclusive to east of the Mississippi?

Can anyone also tell me how to figure out the locations that they will or will not hire out of in case I move or something. I have seen the website terminal map but the policy seems convoluted to me.

 

I don't know about the engines or horsepower but yes they do run all 48 states and Canada. Call 1-800-467-6345 and they will put you in touch with someone who can tell you what lanes of hire they have. Don't worry they are not pushy.

 

Hi there, Roehl is good about home time.....They usually get the driver home after weeks out....The driver can stay out longer if he wants. My husband is national so I don't know what he can expect running the midwest regional. I would think he can average between 2500 and 3000 miles. My husband ran 3200 this past week.

 

Man I got some good info from this forum. Thanks everyone for all the usefull input and help. I am about a week away from scheduling my oriantation with Roehl, I can't wait until I get started.

Thanks to this forum and all the flat bed drivers input I think I am going to go with national flatbed fleet. I kind of wanted to do van before but I think flat bed would be a little less tedious and I can get some exercise that way too. I talked to my recruiter and got all the info I need, I am going to relocate to Kenasaw, GA in october and she said that would be fine they can just have me run out of there.

I really like the recruiters a Roehl they seem a lot nicer and more truthfull than the other companie's recruiters and from what I've heard most everyone at Roehl is that way. I really hope to get some good experiance at Roehl and possibly drive for them for a long while.

One thing I wanted to ask you Roehl drivers: What kind of home time do National guys get? The recruiter told me I would be out for 7 to 9 days, if I am out for 7 I get 48 hrs at home, and 9 i get 72 hrs. Is there any truth to this(even if it is a little off thats ok)? I don't really care to much about home time right away, I would rather make more money and get the experiance first.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

 

Sleepy according to my husband's DRG hometime goes like this....
7 days out - 2 days off
11 days out - 3 days off
18 days out - 4 days off
24 days out - 5 days off
30 days out - 6 days off
36 days out - 7 days off
Can't bank home time for later use or combine home time with vacation time.
