Just recently, I passed my CDL written exam and now I'm ready to go back to school. I might even have a potential job lined up when I get out. However, I'm trying to learn as much as I can about the pre-trip beforehand, so I have a bit of an unfair advantage. I found this program by CDLhelp.com that looks like a good program to do some out-of-school studying. However, the website only shows pictures of city buses all over the website. I have absolutely no interest in obtaining my passenger endorsement, and do not intend to drive a bus, ever. I was wondering if any bobtailers out there have used this program and found it helpful, or have tried another program and found it to be worth the extra couple bucks? Thanks for all your help and good luck out there!

If you are going to CDL school they will teach you the PTI, all you have to do is pay attention and learn what everything is for.

Do not try to only learn by rote, try to understand each step involved and why it is important.

And there is no 'unfair advantage'. There are those that study, and those that don't.

Sounds like you are in the former category.

Just to clarify, I DO actually study my notes, I DO pay attention, I DO understand what I'm looking for and I DO know why it is important. I am not trying to get one step ahead of the game by cheating, but if I had an opportunity to have a study guide or a set of notes to study BEFORE enrolling in school, I am going to take advantage of the opportunity just as I know anyone else out there would, including yourself. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you do have to study a CDL book to pass your written exam at the DMV, don't you? How is a state issued CDL book any different from purchasing a published pre-trip study guide from a legitamate company? Please do not insult my intelligence by posting a demeaning reply in a poor attempt to take a cheap shot at a guy who you think is trying to get ahead by taking every possible shortcut to get to the top.

I think you misunderstood what I said.

I said it sounds like you are one of those that study (which was the 'former' category).

And I did not in any way think you are trying to cheat by seeking outside help. Doing that just shows more determination on your part.

I was just saying that you probably won't need it - just because you do take things seriously and study, while others might not so much, and you will really have enough time to get it down pat before you are tested on it.
We spent an entire week on the pre-trip. At the end of that week most of us could do it in our sleep.

I withdraw my previous comments and sincerely apologize to you then. I am just a little nervous because I keep hearing the PTI is an absolute nightmare, and according to the school I'm going to, you only get two shots at passing, and then you are out $3000. I understand that the best way to go is to STUDY STUDY STUDY, I'm simply just trying to get a jump start on my studies so that I'm not walking blindly into a so far deemed rather intimidating process into being a future trucker. I've even turned wrenches in my own personal time for about 9 years now, so I have a general idea of what to look for and why to seek it out. I guess I'm just letting this thing get the best of me, and I just need to step back and take a deep breath. Again, I apologize for my temperment.

The manual from the DMV gives a PTI overview. The JJ Keller book we use in class, teaches a very detailed PTI, Different trucks have slight differences in the way the PTI is performed and the schools have their way of performing the PTI. The school I am at now teaches a specific way to do the PTI and it is based off the CDL exam checkoff sheet the license examiners use. In a way, it could be called be called a cheat sheet. So you see, there is no magical way to cheat to get ahead. Every student is equal more or less at the start. Some pick up on things faster than others. Listen to the instructors, take your time, study your school books and learn the parts and what to do and why it's done, take it seriously, be safe and follow the schools guidelines and you should alright.

The instructor walked us through the PTI, then lets each student follow the checkoff explaining the how and why of what they are doing while the instructor is watching and catching anything we miss. Each day we are out in the yard, we have to do a complete pre and post inspection. After a week, we are tested on it. After 3 weeks, you should be able to do it with the CDL examiner just fine.

No need to apologize, haulin, I quite understand.

And while the pre-trip is a bit daunting at first, it is still just one thing at a time. Take your time and go from one thing to the next and all will go smoothly for you.

Probably the hardest thing is the frame to wet hub, which is probably why we were taught that portion first. But once you know it, it is 'basically' the same for all axles. The rest will fall into place once you start actually working around the truck and can see and touch everything.

So if you want to get step ahead, study 'frame to wet hub'. Then when the rest of the class is doing that, take some time to study the COLAP (which is the brake tests portion, and is probably the most important part of the pre-trip.)

Awesome, thanks for the tip Moosetek. I can't tell you how many times I've been called out by a "professional" or a "veteran" for being the "stupid noob." I'm no stranger to forums, and needless to say, I get a lot of ignorant comments about asking the same stupid, annoying, asked a million times already question(s), henceforth my defensiveness. However, your tip(s) about my studies will prove to be most helpful I'm sure. I thank you kindly, and I'll be sure to do a little digging to see if I can brush up a bit before school.

Hey, us stupid noobs gotta stick together - right?

I also helped some of the others in my class that were having a hard time.
Funny, but I was the only one in my class to score less than 100% on the pre-trip.

I failed to mention the mud flaps and rear lights on the tractor, so I lost 2 points. And that was the main thing the instructor warned us about, and one of the things I always brought up to other students that I was helping.
    Then, come crunch time - I FORGET!!!:biggrin_25510:

I can only say I think this is happening alot. BUT I think its 2 sided. The exp people are thinking this is so stupid and "some" of them forget what it was like to be new and not know. I also wonder how much different or harder things are now with all the new bs laws, rules and gov bs they talk about.

On the other hand us new people are stressing in this hard economic time some of us have no income or little income and feel this is it our last shot all we have to hang our hat on. and we get a little tightly wound.

there is alos the part of .. this is all text we are reading and it can be hard to get across. If we were great with words wed be Authors not truckers???:biggrin_255:
