All things are negotiable driver - I make a lot more then that. As a matter of fact very few drivers make what I do yearly! Union and Line drivers are the closest to my yearly income!

May is a great company your right about that! On the 30 VS 36 comment logistics don't work like that. Trucking is about servicing costumers, hours ava. and unit closest to load moves first. This is a business no time for picking favorites. I would imagine most companies don't have time or inclination to strategies this insane theory most truckers have.. "if I make more money they will run me less then the lower paid drivers and starve me out"

The truth is May Trucking wants to help every driver become a success. The idea that "they want to bring in lower paid company guys" is a trucker myth. It cost May and many other companies 8000 dollars to re seat a unit. Not to mention the risk or accidents, poor costumer services etc.
The little extra cents per mile ends up being well worth it, trust me!
Our turnover is low against the industry standard and our safestat score is among the best in the industry!

    Hello Drew,
Thanks for the question! Trucker Steve here, May Driver of 5 years.

    1) The idle percentage varies by month. In incremental weather conditions (extreme heat or cold) They will input exceptions. So say it is 100 degrees outside and you send a message stating "it is 100 and I need to get 10 hours rest" The will make exception that don't count against your allowed percentage.

The idle policy is tantamount to a companies success. Many drivers are not responsible enough to manage their fuel consumption. A company without a policy in place will be idled out of business. Most companies have several ways of tending to this issue OPT idle is one among many where the truck will literally turn its self on and off to manage this.
May gives you the option to run the truck if you like. You can pay or ask for exception.

It is important for all companies and individuals to manage their expenses or they mange to go out of business or become homeless. This policy is one of many reason I will have a job in the years to come. It teaches a driver to think about leaving the truck on while they walk into the truck stop to shower and eat. I don't see anything wrong with holding a driver accountable for his decisions.

If it where your house and you paid 300 hundred dollars a month for electricity and then you have a friend move in who leaves everything on in the house all the time instead of turning things off like you do. You get your bill it is now 600 dollars and you can't afford your rent or lose your electricity. Would you not ask for the difference to pay your bills? Should you pay because your friend is irresponsible? Absolutely not, No responsible company would!

    2) The home time policy is written as such 1 day off for every 7 worked 14 days out on dry side 21 on 48 side.

Now for the truth - All things are negotiable. Nothing is set in stone! I have had may bend over backwards in this re guard.

Example: I had been with May 2 months when I had found out my mother had cancer I told May, I was home the next day. They told me to take my time and when I was ready to come back. They made a position for me so that I could take care of my family financially and be home every night to be in the hospital with my mother!

Example 2: Less then 8 months ago I mentioned to my DM in conversation (not asking) That my brother was sick and not doing real good. Now I get through Nashville TN all the time on loads that are planned with plenty of time to visit. 2/3 days sometimes. Mind you I didn't ask for this at all!

Example 3: 3 months ago I had got the flu bad. I was under a dispatch, when it all went down hill. I made it into the layton terminal my dispatch had the load re powered. To my surprise they had a hotel set up for me and a ride to the hotel as well. My operations manager in Brooks, Or called every day to makes sure I was not dead. She had someone from the Layton, UT terminal bring me food every day as well. I was down for a week.

Here is the truly awesome part. When I had checked my pay settlement on Friday thinking the week was a complete waste I realized how great May is. They paid me for the week I was down based on my weekly average. Hows that for a awesome company?
